I have a small Galvanized Trash Can lined with a Tall Kitchen Bag outside to collect the poop. In my area it is permissable to dispose of dog poop in the trash if it is double bagged. Weekly I put the poop bag from the can into one of my trash bags.

You need to confirm what the proper way to dispose of dog poop is in your jurisdiction.

I hope that is an acceptable answer.

Thank you both, there are many options out there ... I had been looking at a rake and pan since I've used that at a local dog park.

Salti, I read the town guidelines already since I was curious and I can also dispose of the poop with my trash.

Here's a suggestion for you - or for anyone getting a new dog.

Go on line and the schedule for AKC All Breed Dog Shows in your area. Hopefully you'll find a cluster of two or three shows at the same location over a long weekend. If you have an AKC Breed or even a known mix, check the schedule for ring times for that breed.

Leave your dog at home, but bring your wallets and purses. Typically there are many vendors with all kinds of deals on collars, leads, foods, crates, fleeces, pooper scoopers, etc, etc.

When I adopted my retired racing track Greyhound, I did this and got to meet some nice owners and nice Greyhounds. (Track Greyhounds are NOT AKC, but rather have their own registry. However they do share a good disposition and health history and only have some minor physical differences... chest size being one.) I also visited my long-time breed, Bulldogs, and enjoyed that also.

MANY, MANY vendors. Bought lots of stuff, some of which I had forgot even existed.

my dh made me one out of some scraps of metal he had lying around. It's basically very similar to the rake and pan one, but instead of a rake it has a spatula type end on it. does a great job and cost nothing if you have someone handy to make one.

Pam, I read the rake and pan work better than the single scoops.

We bought a scoop (before learning 2 is better than 1) but never used it. We use a plastic poop bag after each poo. We bought a poo can and store it outside near a corner of our house. We double bag the can so the poo is inside the second bag to decrease smells. Then toss the inner bad into the trash. The next week, we put in a new liner bag and the old liner becomes the poo bag.

Our city lot is not very large so we stay on top of the task - even in the snow and rain. We keep our puppy on leash until the task is completed. Granted,we are dealing with a puppy and not two adult dogs.

If our soil would support it, I would consider a doggy septic tank.

I posted a thread on this topic a few months ago. We had to move the poo out of the garage as we couldn't stand the garage wreaking of poo.

Thanks again .. good point about the garage smelling. I will finally have a garage and don't want it to smell.

I know I will need to keep on this task. My dogs are both farm dogs and used to being off leash, I'm not sure my older one would do his business if he was on a leash. Getting them settled and used to a suburban home and yard is what I am most concerned with for this move. In time, they will adjust, I just hope they adjust quickly.

I have determined that all scoopers and scrapers end up with "resi'doo'" that needs to be removed. Now, I just use two poop bags- one as a glove, and one as a receptacle. Pick it up with one hand, deposit it into the bag in the other hand. When fullish, tie it off, and put in garbage. I found an array of roomy, sturdy & biodegradable bags on Amazon.

So far I've been using a plastic bag for every pickup, but it's too bad to send so much plastic to the dump. I took Salti's idea and found a large, metal coffee can, lined with a sturdy plastic bag. So far I pick up with an old trowel (small dog). The can has a clay pot dish for a lid. It will take quite a while to fill up, but it's good to reduce use of plastic bags. Thanks, Salti and everyone else for the ideas.

The lid should be good enough to keep the rain out - and the odor in - if possible. My metal galvanized can is about the size of one of those Home Depot orange cans. 5 Gal???

It's what you get if it is too warm to snow.

It was 83 degrees here in MD today - possible snow in the forecast this coming week. (No, not an April Fools Day joke.)

I'll take one of those 83 degree days! We have been getting rain with snow in the forecast and the yard is a mess. Not letting Puppy off lead in the yard for several reasons. He made an error and started through the fence and was confused on what to do so making sure he is good in the yard. He also had an injured paw plus the rain would make the yard slick and would turn into mud quickly. The vet wanted relative rest - try that with a puppy! His paw is healed, so now just need the yard to not be so slick to give him a chance to run.

I am concerned about the plastic and will be switching to bio bags. Our yard is not very large so we pick it up immediately. Pooper scoopers would have wer ans smelly resipoo for sure.

I pick up poop immediately during the day. (Actually take dog back inside and I return to the scene of the crime.)

In the dark of night I have a problem finding the poop, so I can return and go directly to the poop. I have a few old golf balls that I have spray painted red. I also have a few of those small red flags that you see the utility people some times use to mark the location of underground services.

If ground is frozen, I drop a red golf ball when she poos. If not frozen, I plant a small red flag by sticking the wire into the earth. I have been even known to throw a red flag on the ground and announce, "ILLEGAL HOLDING, 15 Yards from the spot of the foul!." (Dog gives me really funny look.)

I must add that wife is a player in this game in that she also picls up poop if she stumbles across a red golf ball or red flag.

My wife has been known to tell neighbors that after fifty-one years of marriage that there is still at least one thing we can communicate about.

But what does she know?

Scenario. Dog on lead at night. Poops. I drop red golf ball as I lead her back to house.

Get poop in the light of next morning by going right to the flag or ball.

Maybe I will try a red tennis ball. Flags are a no go. Long story

If that doesn't work, a red basketball? lol

He might try to shoot hoops. He is a good soccer player. LOL
