Amanda - I'm not a Tillandsia grower as my preference is Neoregelias, however your pup looks OK to me but perhaps some of our more experienced "Tilly" growing friends on here could give you a more accurate prognosis.

All of it was a deep green then the base just turned yellow and brittle, I hope it can be saved.

Watch, it may continue growing from the center. Mist it every day or two, soak it occasionally (weekly maybe, depending on your conditions and local humidity), and make sure it is in a place that gets air circulation (i.e., not in a terrarium), and let us know how it goes :)

Unfortunately as I was shaking excess water off of it, it fell completely apart. I don't seem to have much luck with air plants. Thanks everyone though for the help.

Sometimes a plant won't thrive even under the best possible circumstances. Yours looked a bit like a Melanocrater (see, for example, http://www.airplantshop.com/Tricolor_Air_Plants_p/tricolor-3.htm which is not necessarily an endorsement of the site, just a sample of what the plant looks like). I think I got mine locally. It sent out a stalk and flowered -- and died "without issue", as they say, or no pups. Discouraging. I know more now about air plants, but I don't think I'll try one of those again, or butzii, which are too prone to rot. Some plants are just too demanding and we can't give them what they need.

On the other hand, I'm having surprising success with simple ionanthas. Quite a few bloomed over the winter (as they would in their natural habitat when hummingbirds would be there to pollinate them), and two actually surprised me by bursting into seed, which are in a mass of fuzz and I'm not sure what to do with them but leave them alone on some tree bark (inside my home) to see if they like that and will grow. If they don't, their mother plants are pupping profusely.

So don't give up, just switch plants. Soft gray strictas also grow easily. I'm sure other posters have some easy-grow ionanthas they can recommend.
