reversed polarity

I jumped my craftsman lawn tractor by hooking positive cable to starter and touching negative cable to the frame it worked the next time i tried the polarity had reversed how is that possible I had to hook negative cable to starter and touch positive cable to the frame for the starter to turn the correct direction can anyone tell me how to fix this please

You have your wires crossed. DC motors on a lawn mower are PM permanent magnet. The go in one direction only if you have it wired correctly. Yes, you can reverse it if you change the polarity.

And if you change the polarity you can blow out the diode circuit, then your charging circuit will not work.

In order for the throw out start gear to engage it has to be going in the proper direction. It is on a threaded shaft. The wrong way will make it stay in the nested position.
