I whitewashed the fireplace. I like it, but something isn't right? How do I fix this? Can I remove the whitewash?

What about trying to cap the mantle in a wood similar to the kitchen cabinets. Can you remove the vertical trim along the sides of the fireplace? One more thing . . . I can't see the rest of the living room but would be nice if the couch could be placed in a different spot so it wasn't blocking the fireplace.

I also wonder what it would look like to have distressed wood boards, similar to the kitchen cabinets, done horizontally in behind the fireplace picture that filled the recessed square and then have the mantle to match.

Thank you SO much for your comments. We are going to try the distressed wood boards, using cedar boards and then painting them to match the kitchen cabinets and putting them in that recessed area to see how that looks. I will also rearrange the couches. We have an 11' x 11' black shag rug that is currently at the cleaners that goes under the sofas. I will post another picture when I get it all done.

I think it would look better if it was a solid color, adding some vertical trim & framing. Part of the issue it the difference in color that you see in this room with the kitchen in the background. I agree that the sofa placement would be better by not having the back of the sofa to the fireplace since that is a focal point. Good luck!

The wall colour doesn't really complement the fireplaces stone colour. Perhaps doing something with more of a grey or navy blue tone would look better. But I think you've done a great job! Definitely try rearranging the sofa because it's a shame to block it and it looks a bit awkward.

Yes ,a mantle of the same wood color as the kitchen cabinets but also a large painting over the mantle that will cover a larger part of the brick. The art on the right wall is also not the right proportion and style an is hung way to high.

I have thought that the wall color doesn't compliment the fireplace stone color also. I wish I hadn't whitewashed it to begin with. Painting that entire room is not really an option as it ties in with the entry and dining color. I know it is hard to make suggestions without seeing the entire house but I appreciate the input. I wonder about covering the fireplace with a stone or tile?

You could repaint it a creamier white to match your trim. It wouldn't be so stark.

You could see how they looked before you do anything else. I am partial to the one that is painted black. The nice thing about paint, it that you can change it.
