Once you spray Roundup to kill the Bermuda grass, I would wait a couple of weeks and spray the grass again, especially any new growth. Then I would cover the entire garden area with several layers of newspaper or cardboard before topping off with soil. That is what i did and it worked very well.

If you are going to use roundup, give it an opportunity to work, and definitely use overlapping cardboard or multiple overlapping layers of newspaper and then add the soil and amendments on top. You can read about this method by looking up lasagna gardening. However, if you are impatient, ignore the round up step and just put in a good layer of the cardboard/newspaper. Make sure they overlap. Bermuda is very adept at finding a way out :)

Ah, good suggestions. Can't believe I didn't think of the cardboard, etc. But, that's what this place is for. Impatience is a big part of the problem. I can't plant until I get the soil in, but can't get the soil in until the grass is dead, can't kill the grass until it warms up more....I have the soil sitting in a trailer, ready to go.

What I've had some success with when I expanded my garden, was to till the bermuda and then rake the grass out. Its a bit of work, but I got most of it out. I would think that then covering with cardboard, you would have good chance of eliminating the bermuda.

I believe I'll give it a few more days, hope the bermuda begins to come out of dormancy a bit, then Roundup it. I can then cover in cardboard, fill it in, and wet it down a few days. I'm probably going to stick with something simple like wildflower seeds in that bed this spring. If all goes well, I may try to put in some perennials in late summer or fall. Not much to risk that way. Appreciate the logical help.
