I placed mine in morning sun (sun until 11am in the summer months, which is May-September here) ) and shade afterwards. A place that is not too windy would be well received and 3-4" of mulch should seal the deal. Full shade that is bright shade can also work but they will bloom best and produce better Fall foliage if they get at least some direct morning sun (2 hrs, say?). Enjoy. I am getting some cuttings too later this week thanks to Shirley. but those are not oakleafs.

I should add that some oakleaf hydrangeas can get large so, find out what variety you have so you can select the location accordingly.
