Gloss or matte ceiling tiles?

We're replacing the ceiling of our kitchen - dining room. Originally I was just going to do a plain, drywall ceiling, but for a few reasons we're now looking at glue-on, embossed ceiling panels. First choice at the moment is the Fasone Traditional 1 panel in white. The white is a very high gloss. Our home is a nice but modest Craftsman bungalow with a lot of wood trim. So would you paint them, I suppose to a more satin finish? That's an extra step, but probably the way to go. Right???? I've never really spent a lot of time thinking about ceilings!

The finish of a tongue and groove ceiling is your choice. Look at photos and decide which you prefer. I love both.........

Regarding the attic: you might consider also adding extra supports to help support the weight that you are adding upstairs as well. Ask your contractor about adding a new floor joist to the side of each existing joist........(this is called "sistering") It will give you peace of mind.

I do not recommend a high gloss ceiling in a house...........re-consider your options.

Drywall is actually the best choice for a Craftsman bungalow, or a tongue and groove wood ceiling.

I agree with Lampert, stay away from high gloss! If you decide to use those panels, take the sheen down to matte. Thinking of a tongue and groove wood ceiling is making me drool!

Thanks. The main reason we started considering other options is because we're thinking about finishing a room in the attic and our GC said our ceiling joists weren't that strong; that traffic up there would/could crack a drywall ceiling. So we started looking at tiles. How would you respond to that?

Okay. So about the tongue & groove wood ceiling, which I do like. Would you be talking about a white or natural wood finish?

If your rafters aren't strong enough you will need to reinforce the rafters before you are able to make that habitable space. Putting in a flexible ceiling doesn't solve anything.
