My laundry is making me dizzy :(

I recently read about soaking the washer in vinegar to clean it.

Well about 2 weeks ago, I let my washer soak overnight in hot water and 2 cups of vinegar. The next morning i let the cycle finish, and immediately noticed a stinky smell emanating from it as the soak water was emptying. Afterwards I checked and cleaned the drain hose, but nothing appeared to be wrong. Not thinking much about the smell, I started doing laundry like usual.

Ever since then I have found myself constantly dizzy when I'm in proximity of my laundry. I also get these slight burning sensations around my waistline. These symptoms have been very debilitating. The only time my body feels at peace is when it's sitting or laying down. Is this an allergy?

After thinking long and hard about the smell, the vinegar might have uncovered mold, because my laundry is giving off the same kinda smell. Realizing this, I threw a tablet of Affresh into the washer and let it run. I have since rewashed all my laundry in hot water, but much of the dizziness has not disappeared. I have soaked overnight in hot buckets of vinegar and borax, and am not getting any results. I have even attempted handwashing to avoid the washer altogether, but i still can't get it out.

Thankfully, thinner fabrics don't seem to give me as many symptoms. Honestly, they are the only reason i am able to write this with a sane mind.

I feel so stuck. If there is mold in my laundry, how do i get it out?? My buckets won't hold bulkier items like blankets, bedding, or comforters. I also can't afford to throw anything away, much of my laundry is fairly new.

Something else I never really thought of, could i be mistaking the mold for something like sulfur?

Maybe this has nothing to do with your washer or your clothing. If I were you, I would go to a doctor. It might be an inner ear issue.

@graywings123 I had thought the same thing, but I don't feel anything wrong with my ears. I felt perfectly fine before 2wks ago when I had soaked the washer in vinegar.

@sushipup1 I read that dizziness can be caused by allergies. I'm not even sure if dizziness is the right term, I just feel unbalanced when i walk around, and wonder if its due to residual mold in the elastic around my waistline. If mold is in my clothes, then i need to get it out. But how?

Forget the mold. When you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras. Yes, the unbalanced feeling is what my friend has. She sometimes says she feels like she is leaning. Talk to your doctor.

I don't know. That doesn't really explain the burning sensations around my waistline. When i take off said clothing, my dizziness goes away almost instantly.

Have you tried wearing pants that haven't been washed in the last two weeks?

If it is your washer and when you get it cleared up, make it a point to never close your washer lid when it's not in use. My washer is 6 years old and smells nice and fresh :) I NEVER close the lid between washings, I use baking soda in certain loads and vinegar (not at the same time of course!). HOT water washes are also helpful.

Vinegar will not clean or kill mold. Oh it may to some extent, but to really get rid of it it takes Clorox, and not the scented varieties. What detergents are you using and have you changed brands. If you have washed your clothes in hot water and dried on a high setting, that should take care of it. But really to be on the safe side, you should see a doctor and explain all this to him/her.

You could also try a free and clear detergent and see if that helps.

What machine do you have? HE or traditional top load? and have you done extra rinses? And as mentioned above, let the washer dry out after use.

Your clothes need an oxygen bleach like Oxiclean. Don't just wash with it, give them a long soak. I am not sure how effective the sun might be, but especially now that winter is over, you might try drying your clothes out in the sun to further kill the mold. Perhaps someone with mold/sundrying experience can chime in on its effectiveness.

I have read that after killing the mold, you need a way to remove it, because even dead mold can stink and be just as harmful, as they still give off mycotoxins. These might be the source of your dizziness.

This might also be where hot water and some fast agitation from your washing machine will come into play best.

@beaglenc I agree, the vinegar is not as effective, though I do think it works great on removing soap from clothes. I use Seventh Generation powder detergent, but was using a liquid brand called Ecos.

@monicakm_gw I own a top loader and always leave the lid open when finished. I agree, hot water is very good.

The harsh environment that my clothes have been washing in seems to be having some side-effects. I've recently noticed some rock sediment appearing in my washer after the load is finished. It looks like a mixture of green, black and white molded into a small flat rock. My loads smell like BO whenever I see it, and I'm pretty sure it's mold, though I'm not sure what kind of species it is. I wanna say black, but I'm not sure.

Unfortunately, whatever that crap is, I've since decided to convert to handwashing my clothes. I admit it's not very fun, but I do think it's been helping me.

@dubs44 I tried the Oxiclean and that stuff kicks some serious mold @$$! The dizziness has been gradually dying down as I continue to wash and soak things in it, and I am so grateful. I have been using 1 full scoop of Oxiclean per gallon, as suggested on the box. I am not sure what you mean by "removing" the mold after its been killed, the Oxiclean doesn't seem to care and eats it right away :]

I've been hanging more and more stuff outside, as I do like the idea of the sunlight getting to the clothes.. can't always rely on mother nature though, it's been very rainy here lately.

Pokerfish, I seriously think you need to see a doctor and relate to him/her exactly what you have said here.
Are you on any sort of meds at all?

    @lindac92

There is no need, I can confirm mold IS the cause. Going to a doctor might have made things worse, like confuse me and lead me down an endless path of solutions that aren't fixing the main cause. To get away from mold you either have to remove yourself from its source, or remove it from you. Because i cannot fully remove it from my washer without actually taking the thing apart (something nobody wants to do), I have to resort to handwashing. There is nothing wrong with my ears, either. I can tell a difference in my health when I use oxygen bleach like Oxiclean, on my clothes. Because I share a dryer with others, I may be better off air drying as much as the weather will permit, to avoid any all exposure to what is thrown into that washer.

I've known along I've had an issue with mold, and the source of it was indeed coming from my washing machine, or more specifically, the pieces of sediment that I've been seeing.. which I am still trying to learn more about. I'm shocked that after all the chemicals I've thrown into the washer to kill the mold, that the mold still continues to live on, possibly underneath hard water deposits that occasionally fall off. I'm also surprised this sediment isn't more of a widespread issue, let alone the fact that washing machines are as popular as they are. I do believe what I've been experiencing is a mold allergy.

Forgive me if I'm repeating any of the above. Vinegar is good for hardwater deposits. I would try about a cup or two in a FL and twice that in a TL. Hottest setting and longest cycle. Follow with a couple of rinses and then use the same amounts of LCB and see if that helps.DO NOT MIX LCB AND VINEGAR in the same loads. A toxic gas will result.

I may have missed something. Is this your personal washer or in an apt complex that others use? Is buying a new washer doable? How about contacting your state's water board to have them investigate the quality of your water.

Mold is a nasty fungus, it can cause skin allergies and respiratory problems. Vinegar will kill some mold but bleach will kill it all.

Top loader: fill your washer with water and add two cups of bleach. Let it soak for at least one hour, drain and wipe the inside with paper towels.

Front loader: fill dispenser with bleach and run a sanitize cycle. Wipe drum and seals with paper towels.

Always leave the lid/door open to let it air out, fungus and bacteria love warm moist environments

Try going to a laundry mat for a few weeks and see if that helps. I use oxi clean in every load.
