Need help with dining area

last modified: 10 years ago

I have been paying attention too much to the living area section of my apartment, and seem to have neglected the dining area (just off of the kitchen). Any ideas to help make it look less like an afterthought? Can't paint the wall unfortunately - but happy to ditch the table if needed for another.

Where do the two doors go? I presume one is the exit and the 3rd louvered door is a utility closet of some sort (laundry?). You're right, your poor DR looks like the orphan child, but those doors complicate things. Can you post a photo standing in the front door looking in?

@Suzanne_sl One is a second bathroom, the other is the washer/dryer.

@l pinkmountain What type of rug do you mean? A circular rug or like a more structured rectangle type style. I wouldn't worry about the corner chair, it's not used. I barely use the table to be honest. :D

    Nice apartment!

I agree about a rug, to anchor the space.

I'm wondering if it would look better to rotate the table so that the lamp is not behind a chair? Squaring the table rather than angling it?

I would add some more pictures, rather than the two lone ones, maybe some type of gallery wall(s). Or, one wall with a few pictures, and one wall with one larger picture/canvas/etc.

Something more substantial on the table -- a silver or wooden bowl/vase, for example, or glass, but more colorful.

If you do look for a new table/chairs, I'd get a round one, rather than square. Or, another idea is a corner bench (not necessarily these colors or styles, just wanted to show examples ... also see artwork ideas in first pic):

    .

ETA: If you don't use a table, I'd be tempted to turn it into a reading area. A big chair and ottoman, and side table, for instance. My first apt was a studio, with a tiny, corner dining area, and that's what we did.

The table is a bit small for the space and it seems really crammed into the corner. I'm not surprised that you seldom use it. A larger, round table would be softer. And the table should be pulled away from the walls more. I agree an area rug will help warm it up. And some wall art that is more colorful and substantial. Perhaps a large mirror leaning against the wall next to the "bainbridge" door to capture some light from the sliders and bring it deep into the apartment space.

I'd also look into [getting an "island"[(https://www.houzz.com/products/traditional-kitchen-island-prvw-vr~28644656) of some sort to make your kitchen more of a galley, separate it some from the dining area and give you a lot more work surface and extra storage.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, if you have any more keep them coming! I love them all.

So it looks like I'll be buying a round rug for the space, and potentially swapping the glass table for a corner bench and table. I really like the idea of a reading area, but can't seem to bite the bullet to ditch the table completely. Question on the corner bench - would I still buy a round rug, or a square one?

@Annie Deighnaugh on the topic of an Island, I can't think where I would put it so that it doesn't look out of place. Any suggestions?

Some kind of kitchen island with a small fold out table might work for when it is just you eating/sitting at the table. If you don't eat at the table, move it up closer to the kitchen and see how that goes. Furniture doesn't have to be shoved up against a corner. Looks like you've got room in there for a reading nook AND a dining room table. If it were me, I'd switch out the glass table for some kind of wood bank table that could double as a prep area. Can't see what is against the wall opposite the kitchen set up--that would help figure it out. I'm not great at combing the Web for inspiration photos, but take a look at this one I found at IKEA (my former life "go to" spot for highly adaptable furniture) which features both a nook and an eating/prep island. Don't forget about folding and fold-able tables that work for both when you are alone or have guests.

Thanks again! And for the links to examples, they're helpful for a guy who has no idea what he's doing.

I think I'll ditch the table all together, and switch to a corner reading type area. I'll buy a round corner rug to add a bit more color, and when the table is gone, I'll add some more color on the walls too.

Any issues with putting in something like this (or an oversized chair?) into the corner with an ottoman and side table? Any recommendations on color?

Can you center the table in the middle of the room? That would make it a room and not just a space that you pass through on the way to somewhere else. Also agree on the rug.

My thoughts exactly, louislinus.....I would put the table in the middle of the room and put a rug under it. I would put a tourchiere (uplight) in the corner, rather than a lamp that hangs over the table. I would put something colorful as a centerpiece and maybe a table runner and put a mirror over the electrical box or another piece of art. Something easy to move to get to the elcectrical system, and yet hides it since you can't paint it the color of the walls..

You could probably put the island opposite from the dw so it is convenient to both the sink and the cooktop. Probably about 40" away from the counter. You want to place it in such a way that it won't interfere with opening the door on the DW or the oven, but so you don't have to step too far to reach it or use it for offloading things from the fridge and such. At first it might seem like it's just there, but you'll get used to it very soon. If you are going to get rid of the little table, then you might consider an island with an overhang so there is a possibility of eating at it if you wish.

Another thing to consider, should you miss having the dining table for entertaining, is a convertible coffee table in the living room. There are some very interesting solutions available.

On the chair, if you are going to create a reading nook, I'd make it absolutely as cozy and comfortable as possible. My home is neither the style nor has the room for an Ekornes stressless chair, but I've always wanted one. Certainly something with an ottoman to put your feet up on, and a nice side table.

If you really want to splurge, put a gel fireplace on the wall where the coat hooks are so you can have a truly cozy nook to relax and enjoy.

TV trays, don't forget to get some TV trays! :) My dad just bought a little electric fireplace for his den, he loves it.
