Ha! I suspected as much .... looks totally fake to me too!

agreed fake .. the flower size is off ... compared to the leaves ...

but it could easily be done ... if you got clems that all bloomed at the same time ...

there used to be a clem forum ...

i seem to recall seeing peeps who grew clems in shrubs ... and other plants ... interesting way to add some later summer flowers ... to an early blooming.. airy shrub.. that would otherwise be boring for most of the season .. at the link.. apparently some peeps do this with once blooming old roses ...

There is still a Clematis Forum. They might be able to give you ideas for what each cultivar is. The four petalled blue one may be C jackmanii, but the colour is ludicrous in the photo.

Recently I actually saw a discussion of this exact photo on Facebook that included a number of experts, including the owner of one of the large clem nurseries in the US. The consensus was that both the color and location of flowers was photoshopped (some individual flowers appeared repeatedly, just rotated.) Even in some catalogs (usually not those of clematis specialists, but places like Wayside Gardens) flowers may be photoshopped.

The GW clematis forum is moderately active, more so during the growing season. Clematis are great plants, and I highly recommend them. The most color variation one normally gets with one plant is as the flowers age, there may some color differences in some varieties, usually getting paler. As Ken said, one can plant several on the same support to get mixing colors or on a shrub to get clematis blooms in conjunction with other types of flowers such as hydrangeas or climbing roses.

(I had to laugh that at least 2 of my photos posted on GW showed up in Ken's search . . . )

Petal shape looks wrong for C. jackmanii

ah come on babs... post them here ... ppppllleeeaaasssee

Ken, on my slow rural internet new photos take time to upload, so here is a link to the post they came from. Since the post has those key words of shrub and clematis, at least some popped up in your search.

Clematis wilt can be a bear on large flowered clematis like these - small flowered clematis are often much easier to manage. And look more visually compatible with the informal plantings most people have.

Also if multiple different clematis were to be packed onto one live host they would shade it too much.

thx for the link babs ... no real need to repost them ... thx

I've found wilt on early large-flowered clematis varies wildly depending on variety. Some have never had it (HF Young), and a few (Niobe in particular) seem susceptible regardless of what I do.

I have grown up to two clematis on a large shrub though not more than two, and I always choose the ones that have long internodes so as to not shade the shrub too much, and use large vigorous shrubs. I also prefer the type 1 and type 3 prune varieties, the earliest bloomers and the summer bloomers since they are disease free for me and easy care. I find some are smaller flowered, but there are a reasonable number with larger flowers that are consistently healthy unlike some of the early large-flowered clematis (type 2 prune) if that is what floats your boat.
