Check out this thread of mine from a couple years ago. This was my trachy I severely damaged from heat and not the cold. It is fully recovered and thriving now. Good luck.

My needle palm did the same thing the leaves started drying up and the spear turned brown and fell out. I hope it comes back but if not I have one offshoot that for sure will not die because it looks great.

I once had a Trachy that did the same thing. I poured some Hydrogen Peroxide down the center of the trunk and let it dry out thoroughly. Eventually it pushed out a new, smaller center spear. Well for reasons still unknown to me, I did the "spear pull" test on the new spear and it pulled out...again!! I thought for sure I had killed it by being so stupid. Anyways, I poured even more Hydrogen Peroxide down the trunk and after awhile, it pushed out two yellow, deformed fronds. It didn't really grow that summer, but it survived and even thrived the following year.

Thing is, I don't want to go out and give advice for people to start yanking on the center spears...if you really yank on it, it would probably pull out regardless. However, I think by doing that to mine I actually saved it, because even though it pushed out a new spear, the new one was rotten as well. Once they get cold or heat damaged, they start to rot from the inside out.
