Is there such a thing as "too much wood" in a kitchen???

Our current kitchen has Douglas fir floors, unpainted fir windows & frames, solid fir back door, and honey-coloured maple cabinets. We are changing the cabinets and I'm leaning towards painted cabinets - either off-white with black counter top or perhaps a sage or olive green - unknown colour counter top. Wall colour yet to be determined.

I've also thought about keeping the upper wood cabinets as they are in good condition, I sorta like them, and it will save some $$$. Though I am open to changing them.

My husband wants to replace the floor with marmoleum, and though I do like marmoleum, I'd like to keep the fir as I really like it, except it will need to be sanded and some boards replaced.

In the 10+ years I've lived with this kitchen, I've always thought there was too much wood (despite loving it).

Any thoughts about replacing OR keeping cabinets, flooring, etc. are welcome.

ZOther elements in the kitchen include the backside of a brick chimney, in rusty red brick.

Thanks in advance... (please excuse the mess in the kitchen, these were taken after a meal).

Yes, too much wood, and it appears to all be in the same color family. The floors are awesome, and wood floors look great in a kitchen. The floors can be stained in more of a brown/earth tone family, painted cabinets (I'd lean towards either black or, if you want olive, go towards a gray/olive type color) , granite countertops if budget allows. I like to mix both stained woods and painted wood in rooms. You could keep the door and woodwork stained, although maybe a different color stain than what's on there now. Tons of potential here. If I find any photo ideas, I'll attach them. This could be an amazing kitchen with those floors as a focal point. Good luck!

I like the idea of green cabinets with a black counter

Thanks Suzan. I love the redness of the wood. All of the Douglas fir is in its natural unstained colour, so I'm leaning to keeping it as is or removing it. I thought about black base cabinets (I love black) but feared the kitchen may be too dark. Its north facing with only 2 windows (to the north) and we live in a rather grey, rainy city. So not lots of natural light. Would you do white quarts with black cabinets? And for uppers, keep the wood or go white or black - if black base cabinets? Thanks again!!

So if you keep the natural color of the floors and wood, then black would look great as cabinets. Or, just the lower cabinets in black, like you said - I'd probably do all new cabinets, but it's not my money :). Yes, a light countertop would be striking with the black base. Quartz is a nice clean look. Keep the walls a neutral color, since you don't get a lot of natural light - a warm neutral. Benjamin Moore has nice Historical Colors, and also a new line of paint - Color Stories. Wall color is always the last thing I choose, so don't worry about that until you have samples of everything else - the right neutral paint color, when swatches are laid out with all your countertop, cabinet and fabric samples - will jump out at you. You can bring color in with accessories, fabrics (on the windows and maybe the chair seats).

Suzan, thanks again. I think we're on the same path!! Cost will be a factor with the upper cabs, and I do love finding a way to re-use things - but am not OCD about it. And I was also thinking of a creamy white for walls, though I haven't painted a wall any shade of white in 30+ years!! I've thought about painting the upper cabinets, I really like the photo sam0705 posted above in the lime green. My LR is painted a similar color (BM dill pickle) and things just pop off the wall. My chairs are 50's chrome with studs, upholstered vinyl in 4 different colours with black piping and a black table. I get lots of compliments of them. You can see them in the last photo of the ones I posted on top.)My dishes a re very colourful as well. So, as I write and think about this, I think less colour will be more.

If you went with lighter walls, maybe in the cream family and the granite counter , black or dark, you would find that your kitchen is very rich and charming o. It's own.

I'm huge, huge on color, and I just painted most of my own home in varying shades of white - I even shocked myself! I think if you try to do too many colorful things, you'll lose the impact of, for instance, your chairs. You won't know where to rest your eyes. I saved a kitchen in an idea book under your name if you want to look at it (under my profile). It's fir floors, black cabinets, light (not quartz, but you'll get the idea) countertops. I can guarantee if you use a creamy wall color, your dinette set will pop. Use sam0705's green cabinet color as an accent in fabric or art. If, however you do want to use the green (keep in mind, if you have green in your LR, it might be too much of a good thing, and I love Dill Pickle - great color!) for your cabinets, maybe use it on the bottom, and keep the top cabinets natural, as is. If you look at one of my photos, even though it's not a kitchen, you'll get the idea of what I mean about color. The project is called "Living Room" - pink sofa, orange chair, orange leather ottoman, bold art, bold print on the draperies, and cream walls (BenMoore - CSP-215). You really want someone to walk in and say, "Wow, I love your room", THEN start noticing the details, the dinette set, dishes, countertops, etc. Anyway, that's my philosophy. And yes, I think we're both on the same track. :)

Suzan, thanks again - you've been a lot of help and I'm excited about using a b&w base for the room. I had been thinking of that, among other ideas, and it seems to be coming together in my mind. Too bad the renos won't start until after the summer!! Lots of time to resource stuff, I guess. Thanks again.

I like your floor too. Yes, painted cabinets would be good, or now there is a lot of very interesting laminate out there. Depending on the style of the rest of your house, if you are too traditional or not contemporary enough, then painted is better. You can do two-tone. If your upper cabinets are really nice, you could keep them and just replace the base cabinets in a different color. But you have to be careful what you put together.

I personally love all of the wood and I Iike the natural color. Take a look at these pics. I also like the idea of painting the lower cabinets a different color and doing a white countertop.
