Formal living room - wall decorations

Not sure how to decorate this room. I definitely need wall paint or wall paper. We like modern stuff, artwork, plants, decor for the shelves, Wall paint/wallpaper? Any help would be appreciated.

The colors in the room is of unhappy families. I love the purple, but the niches and area above the fireplace needs to change color. As you like modern and obviously bold color, I would suggest something in the grey family.. maybe Benjamin Moore, Picnic Basket - CSP-730 on the walls and then maybe a Sea glass CSP-735 in the accent areas. That will compliment the purples, and calm the contrast. It will also go well with your carpet. You might consider a piece of modern art for the wall above the couch.

The rug and everything on the shelves are too small and too purple. The torchiere lamp is as far from modern as one can get. Big art over the sofa and on the fireplace, too.

Let's see if we can't bring a little life to this room. Back in a bit with a rendering.

Once grover gets you fixed up on your furnishings, I would suggest paint over wallpaper. It's so much easier to change the style or color of the room with paint plus it is cheaper than wallpaper!

paint the wall a complimentary colour to the purple. Grey is a good suggestion. I did my daughters room with this colour purple and used a lot of silver to accent it.

groveraxle, where were you when I needed input on my 2 rooms?.....

ranmarie, I don't know where I was when you had dilemmas. I'm not as prolific as some folks here. The person at the top of the leader board must never eat or sleep. ;-)

The compliment color to purple is yellow, so anything within that family will go well with your lovely sofa & chair. Grover is our number one person for renderings & suggestions. I love lime green with your colors & her recommendation for a larger rug is spot on.

I was going to suggest going with a slight color on the walls with white inside the niches to show off the accessories you dress the built-ins with. however what Grover has shown gives you the same effect. Some ideas:

Bookshelves look best with 1/3 books, 1/3 collections & 1/3 empty space. The books should be split up into stacked, leaning & with bookends & placed randomly to please the eye. The collections should be larger items which are like items placed together. Some photos can be added here & there. Think color.

Roopa, please note the proper assembly of the Noguchi table. Your glass top is in the right position, however your base is not. The long side of the glass top should be positioned "parallel" with the top part of the base, which should be separated with the bottom part of the base at 52 degrees.

groveraxle ~ I love what you did to the room. I really like the rug, would you know where I can get it from? I have a similar lamp in another room that I can move to this. Thank you so much for your suggestions, I really appreciate it.

groveraxle I love the idea of adding green with purple and rug too. Also Turn your wall into works of Art with Original Art work that pops. A piece of Art will definitely enhance the look and gives more color and life to your wall...some suggestion down below and a link for more artwork...

Grover came through again! I did not even think of green to calm down the purple plus green works well with purple!
