You could get white or cream colored vinyl blinds for over the sink. I have them and I love them because like your kitchen, my kitchen can get a little dark, especially on a cloudy day. You can get vinyl blinds anywhere and if you go to Lowe's, they will even cut them down for free if you have an odd sized window. The blinds will not compete with your back splash. If you do not want blinds, you could use solid colored Roman shades in a light color for more light.

Was the quote on roman shades? If not, check them out. I have looked at a lot of roman shades and I thought they averaged about $150 for a window that size.

if you don't need full night privacy, consider solar shades. you can pull them down overnight for some privacy, leave them down through the morning for sun blocking without claustrophobia, and roll them all the way up for the afternoon.
