Sharyn: the easiest thing to do here is test it first (Always test finishes anyways before committing to a project). I would test both ways - mix a teaspoon of both together and try it out. Then use a disposable foam brush to test the one over top the other. Let dry thoroughly between coats.

Thank you all! I am updating my staircase railings (stained rails/white spindles) which are golden oak! I painted my basic builder cabinets 5 yrs ago, but my neighbor (we have the same cookie cutter house) had her cabinets replaced and gave me her upgraded raised panel fronts. So, I have to strip the stiles, and stain with GF gel stain. Its going to be a huge project, but it will be so worth the effort.

Mix like products together at any ratio to make more color options. You can also mix with 10% General Finishes liquid oil base stains to obtain a slightly thinner stain than the normal Gel Stain formula.

Although we don't have the exact color combination you want, here is an example of the Java and Georgian Cherry Gel Stain on a dresser:

I have also been looking into using gel stain on a banister. One tip I was given, was if you mix a custom color, make sure you make enough of it to finish your entire project. It can be difficult to mix an exact match half way through a project. Good luck!

Thank you so much for asking this question! I am thinking of matching the EXACT same colors. I love the red in the Georgian Cherry, but it's too red almost pink for me. Especially in the sunlight, but the Brown Mahogany isn't red enough. I'm going to experiment with tablespoons in the mixtures. What did you end up doing? Any finished pics?

I had a coffee table built with cherry that we happened to have laying around. I wanted a darker finish with almost no "red" tint. I started with GF Walnut, and when not dark enough I did two coats of Java over the top. I got the exact color I was looking for. I don't know if this was from Java being so much darker or if the colors really played off each other. And plenty of beautiful wood grain still shows through (a must for my "real wood look" loving husband.
