Is there a finish coat on the stained shelf? I may need to add a gray stain to get closer to the preferred weathered look I'm after. Diane

The distressed finish is a coat of organic stain and a baking procedure. If you want to order the shelves unfinished then I can include a small sample piece for you to experiment with before you finish your piece.

Are these shelves ok to use outside and if so is there a particular finish I should use?

Any exterior house stain will work.

So you would recommend using and exterior stain for outdoors use, rather than leaving them as is?

In general an exterior stain with more pigment will protect wood from the elements better than a clear coat finish. It sounds like you want to put our distressed shelves outside and like any wood product they will age with water, wind and sun. I would say leave them as they are and enjoy them outdoors.
