Cooktop Venting

time for some houzzer help! we moved into our house this weekend and discovered that the gas cooktop in the island has not been cleaned after heavy grease use. there is grease slowly dripping from the down vent into the (thankfully unfinished part of the) basement. since two of the burners don't catch anyway, we are going to just replace the cook top and have someone replace the vent line (we would feel safer this way).
I have never used a down vent and was honestly unfamiliar with them until this weekend. we are not at a point where we can spend a lot of money, but will spend what we need to have a cook top that will last a good while and be safe. what would be your recommendations for a cook top and venting? do those pop up vents work well? we have high ceilings and feel that a hood is not possible at this time.
thanks y'all!
