You may find some evergreen rhododendrons that suit your use. The American Rhododendron Society has a database search that may help you find one that suits if your soil is appropriate. You may also find some ideas at local botanical gardens or an arboretum.

Thank you both. I checked out the links - I keep forgetting about youtube - so many good videos on there. I like the winterberry hollies but they're not everygreen. They do have lots of berries though :)

I've seen some gorgeous rhododendrons but I've also seen some that are so straggly and lanky looking that they aren't that attractive. Maybe they didn't get enough sun, I don't know.

One of the nice things about the search page I linked is you can set the height you like. If they get a reasonable amount of light such as morning sun they shouldn't get too lanky.

Actually, the last time I checked the hollies are evergreen, at least the ones I kept researching ;) but I could be wrong.

Winterberry holly (Ilex verticillata) is deciduous, but there are plenty of evergreen hollies that will form berries (as long as you have one male along with the girls) that should grow in NC.
