Looking fabulous, Dan! Is the guy who put in the sink going to replace the counter for you too? Even discounting no room to install the faucet, that set back would really make using the sink uncomfortable, I'd think. Was the drainboard supposed to be on the left? Otherwise, it's really coming along splendidly.

Yes. I would have preferred the drainboard on the left. But, either way can work.

To make the current counter/sink work, I'll be using the IKEA Yttran kitchen faucet with the base mounted on the sink itself, rather through the rear of the countertop.

This should also help limit the 'reach' factor to the faucet.

And..In my contractor's defense..I had him Kilz (very strong primer) almost every wall and surface of the interior. Maybe too many fumes :)

The reach issue isn't about reaching the faucet, but reaching (over the front counter) to the sink basin when washing. It moves your upper body forward of your center of gravity and puts strain on your back after a period of time. Double check that what you accept in theory will be acceptable ergonomically with everyday use.

This is so awesome.

Took a drive out to the country home today to review progress. Not much done in the kitchen, except for wall texture, subway tile back splash and paint ( BM Grey Wisp). Contractor's helper screwed up and used thin set rather than grout on the tiles, so they will need to be properly grouted.

It's coming along so well. I love the colors. They work really well together.

You've done such a great job. It's fresh and inviting. If I hadn't seen the before pics, I'd never imagine the mess it was.

The transformation is amazing and what a beautiful setting.

Thanks to Gardenweb for allowing me to share the progress on my Kitchen Project, that has mushroomed into something much bigger.

So , this weekend, I went out to the property to check on progress.

Electric outlets installed for Range Hood Vent and Refrigerator. Awaiting electrician for 220 Wiring for the actual range. Plumbing installed and have a working sink (and new hot water heater). Still lots and lots of little things to be completed, though.

Amazing transformation. But I'd still fix the position of that sink so it's not so far back from the counter edge.

Plumbing hooked up for Vanity and Tub. Will be removing lighting fixture and replacing with recessed lighting. Restoration Hardware sconces (Ebay Find for $50).

I came to this by way of today's "most incredible transformations" link. So glad I did! This has been great to follow. Dan, you get an A in communication skills! When you said a vacation house did you mean for your own use or as a vacation rental? You've put an awful lot into it at this point, but it sure looks terrific. I'm still wondering about that fridge door clearance. I had a heck of a time finding a slim AND short fridge because of knee walls & assumed the 6" on the side would be enough to allow the door to swing open to access removal of the crisper drawer...NOT! Hope you have more success.

Would you be willing to let us know what the project cost?

As the property has transformed, I intend on using as a weekend getaway.

The refrigerator worked out perfect. at only 26 inches wide it has just enough room for a full 90+ degree swing open. I haven't tried both crisper drawers yet, but I'm crossing my fingers.

You know...there is always a story behind the story..

As a hobby, I enjoy vintage classic Japanese roadsters. Besides the home on the 1.5 acres, the primary reason for initially buying the property was an existing 28x30 metal building to help hold my old car projects. My original plan was centered refurbishing the shop..

Here is a picture I took during the "Bluebonnet" season about 1 mile down the road.

Like the rest of the project, the Metal shop is slowly progressing, The building originally had a dirt floor, so about 2 weeks ago concrete was poured. The concrete job didn't go as well as hoped, but hopefully it can still work out.

Dan, my Summit fridge is only 5' tall and 23" wide with a 6" space on the side. Instead of a solid wall I have an outside door on that wall that opens in. Cannot get that crisper out. It was the ONLY fridge I could find to fit the space at the time, but I doubt a fridge could be narrower. You'll have to let me know how it works for you. I have soft pine floors and can't be pulling the fridge out just to clean the drawer so I just live with it. I do have a vacation home in FL that has a normal full sized fridge...what a luxury to see what food I actually have in there! AND I can swing the door all the way open because there's a pantry beside it!

BTW, I can't believe you scored that stainless hood for $100 on craigslist. I never find anything there, but have sold furniture and artwork at very low prices.

Good thing you have kept pictures of how it was, because no one would believe you without them. You have done such a nice job!

Did you ever say just how old this house is? I think I saw a mid-19th century lock/knob mechanism on a door by the laundry area.

@capeanner - you can find great deals for vent hoods on eBay. Many of them are no-name, but the price is terrific.

@rae - the home is from the early 50's and was originally from an area in Houston, called the Houston Heights. The Heights is a very, cool, hip area that has gone under a significant revitalization, including many teardowns and rebuilds. This home was transported from the Heights to its current location in 1990.
