Do you plan to keep the blinds? Valances are dated. You could add panels. Hang the rod just under the crown molding and have the panels just touch the floor. OR you could do faux roman shades and hang them above the window.

First thing is get solar shades they will block the sun and heat but allow you to see out all the time.A new light hung much lower , and if you need privacy at night roman shades would be great in a fabric that goes with the rest of your decor. IMO the tan walls are really kind of boring and if they are 15 yrs old maybe rethink that color for real refresh
