1972 house overhaul

We bought a 1972 house that had never been remodeled. Ever. E.V.E.R. We've done a ton to the inside and just had the single pane, metal windows replaced last week. I know how I want to do the exterior, as far as the roof and bricks, but the landscaping.... I need help. I need a genie, a wizard, a person who actually knows landscaping.

The house had three palm tress out front. We removed two. The remaining palm tree needs to have the dead fronds removed. There are two big, beautiful oak trees. The bushes are ugly. I'd like to get rid of them completely. There is an area that is marked by paving stones (I might get the names of some things wrong. Sorry!) It's an odd shape. The inside is lined with plants. No clue what they are. The previous owner had a kiddie swimming pool filled with dirt and, presumably, had grown things in it. We live in Northwest Florida, so maybe that was her solution to all the sand in our soil. I have no clue what to do with that. One friend said to keep that shape, but fill it with flowers; another said to reshape it; another to remove it all together.

We've got the interior going strong, but I've got to get the outside looking better. My family from France is arriving this summer and it would be nice to not have to give the "shield your eyes until you get inside" comment. :) Ideas? Thanks in advance! ~ Leslie
