Hmmm, I think Salvia "Tengy" may be a typo for Salvia macrophylla ‘Tingo Blue’.

Some nurseries are bad about misspelling plants' names...or even getting the names completely wrong!

I think Danita is correct. This plant can be a bit of a monster, but the flowers, although small, are a gorgeous blue.

Any of you from Charleston know Hutchie Cummin? She is your local Salvia guru.

Thanks...after looking at pictures on the Internet, I think you are right...it is salvia Tingo Blue. I am not from Charleston, so don't know Hutchie Cummin. When you say..."can get to be a bit of a monster"?...do you mean size or is it invasive in zone 8b?

It grows quickly and gets 4 - 5 feet tall. It sets seed, which is viable. I doubt it will self-sow much in your environment, but keep an eye out from summer onwards.

I have had seedlings come up here in South Carolina. Although I am zone 8 on the map, I live in a colder microclimate. My original Tingo Blue plant got to be about 5 - 6 feet in diameter, but didn't get much taller than 30 inches. Not sure why that happened.

It often had sideways shoots which can root in the soil.

Seedlings of Tingo Blue are F2 hybrids and are likely to be rather variable, as are later generations. That's why it is necessary to propagate vegetatively.
