Design help, please

You guys know I'm a rookie at this, so I'm having trouble with a plan. I stumbled onto this fabric while searching for something else. I love it! I think it's darling and would make a really cute quilt. Given I'm never around children, I did not realize it was a fabric book as I'd never seen one. My initial plan was to cut it into squares and do something with it that way. Since it's so tall, I was planning on making it 5X6, which would require at least two more dot squares. I looked online and found a similar dot fabric to the dot used in each corner (Timeless Treasures). By the way each square is a little less than 5" to the gray outline.

I stumbled around the fabric store and came up with no good ideas at all. The best idea I came up with was to sash each square. However, solids look too plain against the white and patterns seem to distract. So, the thought turned tone on tone. Still, nothing clicked. (Thank goodness I only ordered one panel to start.) At the rate I'm going on making decisions, I'll still be debating this time next year.

Any ideas? (This looks pink, but the background is white white.)

Would sashing with the dotted fabric work?

That fabric is adorable! Like you, I'm rarely around little ones, but I've gifted several baby and toddler quilts. All of the ones I've gifted have been very colorful and months later the moms have told me how loved the quilt has become- it's the color. So based on that I love the idea a multi color polka dot for sashing...perhaps similar to this....those blocks will be front and center surrounded by primary dots.

This is from fabric.com, but I suspect most fabric stores would have dots in primary Colors.

Another option...stripe dots....

If the squares are 5", I would keep the sashing to 1" finished, but do a preview to see what works best. You may want to do a primary color border after the top is all sashed, then a secondary border of the dots to get this to whatever size you need, like having a picture with a double mat. I'm sure whatever you decide, it has to be precious with those a baby animals as the focus.

Well that's my two design cents....I'm sure there will be more contributions to this discussion!

I think Val's right. You can add a double border that puts another 12" on it each direction. I think I'd quilt around the outside of each animal shape to tack it down and quilt along each side of the sashings. You can do more but that is simple and tacks the whole sandwich together. Such cute fabric.

it's not really primary colors. It's more muted than that. The dots are kind of faded looking with blue, cream, yellow, rust, green and kind of purple.

I'm not sure primary colors would work.

How about bordering each square with a primary color, use the polka dot fabric in primary colors for sashing then border the entire quilt to get the size you want?
