Paint Colors

If I want a bright white cottage-style beach house, do I paint the ceiling the same color as the trim/cabinets/paneled walls/sheetrock? Is there a tried and true white paint color recommendation? I'm looking at Extra White, Super White, Chantilly White, Decorator's White. Help, I need to give the painter my white color choices for the ceilings and walls by Saturday. Thanks!

Do not use bright whites if you want a white cottage style beach house. Cottage style needs to look like it could have been there a long time - bright white is not warm or historical.

Chantilly lace is the only one of these benjamin moore white that would be good - and even then I'd keep it to trim and layer in another white for the walls. Perhaps you would be open to consider walls of linen white and use the chantilly lace as your trim color. When complete, it will still feel BRIGHT WHITE even though the little sample doesn't look it - but not blue-ish white or stark but warm feeling.

Go buy several of these in sample pots and put it on a poster board and carry it around in your space to see it at different times of day. It is the layering of different tones of warm whites that give cottage style - no yellow undertone to these but they have body.

Now, for the ceiling of a cottage white house, I would consider going with a pale white with a bit of color - at the beach, a white that has some blue - lookout point, for instance, is a true muted white blue. Now the layers start to work - even if you went for decorator white on cabinets already, this is the time to try others on these other elements to get the look you want.

I found these Benjamin Moore choices of white and comments from Coastal Living magazine.
White Dove - CO-17 is perfect for trim or in a super crisp kitchen
Decorators White - CC20 - us for ceilings.
Cream White is a warm Beigey in neutral hallways, landings staircase
White Ice has a touch of icy blue great on ceilings to add a hint of color
Glacier White gives white walls sparkle, skim coat 1st then apply this color
in a stain impervo finish with a brush rather then roller for enamaled looking result without the cost.

    Hope it helps!

Thank you so much for these awesome suggestions. I have been putting samples on boards, but, it is still so hard to choose and to decide what should go where. I will definitely take your suggestions in picking out different layers of whites and creams. Can I ask one more question. . .what enamel gloss do you suggest for the paneling (I have lots of paneling on the main level), trim, cabinets? Should the paneling have a lower gloss than the trim and cabinets to give it that extra difference you are talking about?

Do cabinets in gloss and paneling in satin. If you don't like the high gloss do semigloss .it looks good when there's two gloss levels between the cabinets and paneling
