DD2's Kitchen Redo

last modified: 10 years ago

*Thought this was better suited for Decorating since it wasn't a gut, and more of a change due to paint and decor.

DD2 has been in her home almost seven years, but she has only recently “finished” the kitchen. Quotes are necessary since the breakfast room is still the “dog room,” but one day she will be able to use it for its original purpose. The cabinets are decent builder’s grade (aka nothing special but not falling apart) and they have not been in her budget to replace. The cabinets were first painted a medium grey, but decided it made the kitchen too dark and boring. So uppers are now an off white and she recently painted the base cabinets a dark blue - this step took her three years to muster the courage, but she is so happy she did. Purchasing the rug was the final push towards the happiness. I realize this kitchen won’t be a favorite for many, but a reminder that DD2 is only in her late 20’s and she has always embraced color. Some of you might remember her colorful MBR. She totally transformed it recently and I hope to share it soon - she still needs to have the etsy art pieces framed.

A couple of before and after pictures. This is the kitchen with the previous owners' things.

You can see a bit of the wooden dog/baby gate she had made in the photo above (just past the cupboard). The vinyl flooring was replaced a few years ago with the same hardwood installed in the rest of then house when it was purchased. It has held up great with her son and dogs. This was after she moved in (and just before cat food/water was moved to revamped laundry room).

DD2 purchased the cabinet hardware back when it was painted gray, going for a weathered nickel/copper combo finish. The screws on the bin pull are faux - real screws go in the back.

One thing about the kitchen she would like to change is the honking fridge, but the MBR is behind the wall, so can’t build it into a niche. Also, a counter depth fridge is smaller and she uses every square inch of her current appliance.

The same man that built my swinging porch bed made her reclaimed wood counters. It's stained then has an organic sealer.

One of the last things DD2 decided on was the tile. She wanted a subway tile but wasn’t happy with the flat look. We ran across this at a local flooring and tile showroom. It has a more handmade appearance to it with it’s wavy finish.

Rug to happiness.

I gave DD2 the vintage pine cupboard years ago for her birthday. More recently she put the small microwave in the bottom (behind center door) to give her more counter space. She has changed every room since I previously posted about them. You can see a bit of the now different dining room in this picture.

I still need to find info on paint and stain colors, pull-out faucet and tile manufacturers, and will add in the next day or so.

Nice job! I like the two colors of cabinetry and the new light fixtures look great.

Love the wood counters! I've always loved rugs in kitchens too. Don't you love it? I think they give kitchens a less kitchen-y look.

Great job! I really love the countertops. Wonderful color accents with the rug, painting and vintage bowls. Seems you have passed the decorating gene along to her!

What a fun redo. I plan to pass this on to a friend who was just telling me she loves dark blue bases and white uppers. I really like the vintage bowls with their colors pulled from the painting, too. : )

Very nice. It's a clean, comfortable space.

I love the colors----off white and navy look great with her new floors!!! She's made lovely choices that add up to a comprehensive change even if it wasn't a gut job. Great job by your DD, but then I would expect she gets that talent from you :-)

going back to look at the other rooms now!

This is such a tasteful transformation! I love budget re-do's. When my DH and I were first married and on a budget, we did to our first home what she seems to have done--replace the flooring with hardwood, an early and big expense. Then, room by room, update when funds were available. Such gratification! She did a great job.

ETA every inch of our first home was covered with wallpaper so I empathize with what I bet was a struggle removing that wallpaper from PO.

    Thanks, everyone!

Oh gosh, yes the wallpaper... it was (almost) everywhere!

Tibbrx, I really enjoy being at her house (and not just because DGS is usually there with me).

She plans to move the cupboard to the breakfast room if/when it's no longer used to contain the dogs when she isn't at home. Then the rug can spread out a bit more evenly in the kitchen - although she likes it pulled up to the sink area.

Fun, stylish, youthful -- it's all good! Thank your Dd2 for us for sharing pictures of her great new kitchen. I just love the blue & off whir cabinets.

Absolutely love it!! Love the navy cabs. Something I hope to do one day in my kitchen.

I think it looks great! The cabinets turned out beautifully. Love those lights - I might have to look those up, wanting to change out our kitchen lights. She did a fantastic job. I always enjoy her home and hope you'll share more of her new look.

Very nicely done. I imagine she had some help from you in making decisions. I especially like the counters, backsplash, and the navy blue.

That is stunning! What a transformation! It's hard to say what I like more the cabinet colors, the hardware, the wood floors, the backsplash. I love all of it!

What a great re-do! I love it, and I am in love with that rug and the new cupboard.

Beautiful! Definitely cemented my decision to paint my cabinets similar colors-they look great!

Thanks, everyone! I'll be sure she sees all the comments.

I can no longer edit my original post, so I added the rest of the information with the mixing bowl picture post.

Outside, she has bought several kilims. They are on the thin side, but she uses good rug pads. Rosie, her iRobot, doesn't care for them but makes do. lol She has one in laundry, living room, kitchen and a recent addition to the master bedroom that I would love to sneak home one day. It's more faded and just lovely.

At one time, she wanted to paint the cupboard, but I was against that 100%.

jlc712, she had a little help from me. Same for her recent MBR redecorating. I searched for the hardware and light fixtures. We were together at a local antique store and saw the demijohn fixture. It was more than she wanted to spend, but I thought it was perfect. So I went back the next day to purchase and had DH hang so it was a surprise. As far as all the paint colors and rug, that is all her. I sent her a picture of the cupboard for approval before purchasing.

    Thanks again!

I have the same colors in my kitchen and we thought about doing white uppers and blue lowers. We did a different mix, but I really like the way hers turned out. Great update.

Wonderful job on the kitchen! What a difference, very current but original. Love that the kitchen is a true original and not cookie cutter with all the current trends. Thank you for sharing!

Wow! She did a great job. It's beautiful! Love the counter-tops and the backsplash, the two-toned cabs...it's great :) I bet she smiles every morning when she walks into her new fab kitchen :) I love color too!

I also think she did a great job. Loving those countertops! Like night and day.

It looks fabulous! As for that counter depth refrig: remove cabinet above refrig and then there will be room for one that holds a lot.

Thanks. Suzanne, counter depth fridges all seem to be about the same height, so removing cabinets won't help (at least in her price range).

Oh my gosh, what a lovely transformation. The counters are beautiful and I love her rug! I love the fresh look the white uppers, blue lowers brings to her kitchen. She has inherited her mother's great taste. Thank you for sharing this with us.

High five to your daughter, she did a fab job! Love the cabinets in two different colors. Nice!
