Tufted Spring KBG

Hi all. Nothing that important here, but I had some time to kill and was wondering something about KBG in the spring. I've been bombing my KBG over the last two years with tons of leaves mulched in the fall in order to jack up my organic content. I've always thought that I'm probably killing off some of the KBG that might be growing in low spots in the lawn. My main evidence for this is observing a kind of tufted look to the lawn in the spring. I let the grass grow to 4" and the weather has been cool so far in northern NJ. Few people are mowing their lawns in my area as yet. I've mowed a little here and there in small spots as needed. So am I right? Barring any other unusual explanations, is the tufted look a result of killing off small patches of KBG here and there, or is this typical of KBG regardless of heavy leaf loading.
