Removing excess walnut stain?

I have an Indian Rosewood table stained a dark gray with lighter streaks. I was able to hide several small scratches by rubbing a walnut over them. There was one scuffed area of about one by four inches with multiple tiny scratches. I couldn't use the walnut on each scratch, so I ended up rubbing it over the general area. Mistake! The wood grabbed the stain and it looks like a dirty spot. Is there a way to lighten it without damaging the finish? Should I try very lightly buffing the area with 0000 steel wool?

What's going to be safe for the finish depends on what the finish is. Do you know?

If there is a finish, the walnut was absorbed into the finish, not the wood. If there is no/little finish and the wood did absorb the walnut, the remedy is the same.

Remove the finish, sand out the problem and refinish.

Reason? As you found, you got the walnut on your fingers or gloves(if you wore any) And it was not easy to clean off(on skin) and you had to let the stain wear away. That stain is permanent on a surface, so must be removed by removing the material.
