How far to cut back after hail damage?
Parts of San Antonio TX experienced a major hail storm April 12 and I'm having to decide how far down to cut back on several plumeria. What do you think?
#1. This is pretty bad and is near the ground ...
#2. The damage goes deep here too ...
#3. How about this that isn't quite so deep?
#4. Shall I prune below the white or below the brown?
Your opinions will be greatly appreciated.
At best it looks like I'm not going to get pretty foliage and flowers on these plummies for awhile. Maybe I'll plant some flowering annuals at their feet.

PRO10 years agoI think that would be the best approach. In the future you can look at the structure of the branches and see if there are some that would make good candidates for rooting. Do you know what variety it is?

This is my DSP and further back is a Devine the next morning. Many tips crushed and seed pods stripped. You can actually see the fiberglass planter is chipped as well.
Hail Damaged Plumeria · More InfoMy Greenhouse is now well vented and headed for the waste transfer station. Hopefully someone can repurpose the undamaged polycarbonate panels. I had about 30 rooting in there at the time and with a couple exceptions they seem to be ok. Perhaps because they were smaller and would just fall over instead of taking the full hit.

Wanted to let you all know I followed your advice and left all but the most severely damaged limbs. Amazingly even with the bark knocked off half way around the limb the plumerias leafed out perfectly and are blooming.
You can see that the inner layer of bark has attempted to reach around to cover the heartwood.
It's never going to make it around, but that's okay.
I know the scaring looks pretty gross, but it doesn't show from a distance so I've been able to enjoy the five plants that were damaged.
Here are the super fragrant flowers on the other end of one of the above damaged trunks ...
