I am sorry, but not a clematis. Sometimes a Clematis will return after a year's hiatus, but if it doesn't come back this year you may want to start another by pinning down a stem of your survivor so it can root a stem.

My only real issue in keeping clematis alive is that the voles like to eat their roots over winter, so I have started planting them in hardware cloth/wire mesh rings to protect them. Might you have voles?

No voles here but we have prairie dogs and squirrels.

I've never had a problem with underground critters but there's always a first time.

i'll just have to replace the plant I guess.

That looks like a tree seedling. Pull it up while small.

Madam Julia Correvon is my oldest clematis and a reliable bloomer. I suggest you wait a bit longer to see if she will appear. Or you could add another plant nearby while leaving the roots of this one.

i grow many type 2 and type three plants and had a Gravety Beauty that did not appear two years ago. Last year it came up late so no bloom but some growth. Hopefully it will appear earlier this year and bloom. This was a prolific late bloomer on a fence with many others. It didn't stand out as missing unless one knew there should be dark reddish blooms as other years.

In the meantime, I've followed NHBab's advise and am attempting to root an attached stem from my existing MJC, so we'll see. As a cash-poor gardener in an extreme climate, I'm patient if nothing else!
