Sconces in kitchen

last modified: 10 years ago

Hi all, I am planning a kitchen remodel with no uppers on the back wall where the cooktop is. I'm looking to add sconces for lighting and character to the back wall as well as with the sink wall (which will have perhaps 1 or two glass uppers but not a full wall). Forgive my ignorance but will sconces such as this provide adequate lighting to replace under cabinet lighting? I will have recessed lighting and pendants as well.

Thank you. That's what I thought but I never actually had any wall sconces ever so don't really know what kind of lighting they provide. I do like the look though

We've had sconces in two kitchens now, attached to the sides of our uppers. It is a nice look. The lighting is a little softer, nice for ambiance, or when you are tired and just don't want to feel like you're working in an operating room. We still have ucl lights under our uppers, and plenty of cans, in addition to our sconces.

haha! I read it as "scones" in the kitchen and was looking for a photo of some delicious scones!
You can never have too much light in the kitchen especially if everything is on dimmers. So UCL under the glass cabs will be greatly appreciated once all is said and done.

Our glass upper will be connected to counter so I can't have ucl. I might illuminate the very top ones though. I actually don't even use my ucl now, so I think sconces would be just fine. Thanks.

Wanted to add that the kitchen you posted is one of my top three faves of all time. I love the sconces in that kitchen

I like sconces, but they should be considered ambiance lighting, whereas undercounter lighting is task lighting. In the above picture, the ceiling lights are providing task lighting.

I'd go with a couple sconces for a bit of evening light for the person going into the kitchen for a glass of water.

I like the sconces in the above pix (though I think they have too many of them). I like the pendants in the above pix (though I think two would've been better than three). I don't like them together. It looks like the homeowner couldn't choose.

Scones in the kitchen sound good! Lol!

Aktillery, isn't it nice? I love it too! It's one of my inspiration pics. I'm adding windows to my back cooktop wall and no uppers except for fridge wall and a hutch cabinet on sink wall. And sconces. I just adore the look. I'm looking at something like this

I agree with aktillery, that kitchen has a certain something! One of the first ones I saved in my houzz kitchen ideabook. That sconce you show, smm, is also a favorite of mine. It's going to look great!

I would definitely still do a few small cans over the sink for when you want serious, get-things-done lighting.

Yes! I do have two can lights above sink currently. They will stay :)

Whoever mentioned the pendants in the pic I posted, I agree, they don't go well. I'm looking into this island pendant. Though it's probably not practical!
