I am not as bothered by the two different rugs though I agree it does seem a bit odd to have such a solid lift into the heavens with nothing solid enough to bind it to earth. Perhaps the bottom rug as the runner with the runner at the bottom. However, bring art onto the blank wall going up the stairs would probably help to overcome the problem. I would also consider giving the chair a new makeover with a happier mix of colors. I personally think the area is still monochromatic though in another color family.

I like the runner, but that lovely rug should be moved elsewhere as they don't work together. The rug is too subtle and delicate to survive the battle.

Since you asked...I'm not seeing an overall cohesive space - perhaps if the runner had been lighter or the area rug darker/in a complimentary style? If it were my home I think I would paint the spindles white and bannister dark to tie in with the depth of color of the runner (and also change the area rug to better suit). The picture below has components that all seem to work as a whole.

Personally I like the stairs bare better. Not a fan of that rug and it is so dark. But I like wood stairs bare, it's what I have at home, so maybe that's just my personal preference. The rich warm wood tones along with the white risers make it beautiful to me and it does not feel monochromatic.

The space is lovely, with the paneled wall and nice staircase. However, the runner is just too dark, and so, IMO, overpowers those beautiful features.

Well, I guess I am the odd man out. I like the composition of the runner, area rug and settee. If the runner had been lighter in color or the area rug darker; boring, ho hum!

The comprehensive plan was to add art to the bare wall to compliment the stair runner and to re-upholster the settee. You are spot on whynottryit! The design scheme is incomplete without this occurring. The many colors in the area rug were nearly impossible to match so I chose to contrast.

Would be great to see when the art is added and the chair changed, as it would be nice to see the complete picture that reflects your finished concept. Perhaps the chair may not have to have been reupholstered, if the runner had been a soft bluish grey to compliment it, wall color, small table and the rug - just my taste and wanted to be honest. You have received about 1/2 that dislike and 1/2 liking...but in the end it's the client that has to be happy. Regards

I like it a lot! The stairway would have been overlooked as 'just another traditional stairway' but the bold yet quiet runner pulls me in to enjoy the entire space.
