dying branches is not usual. It may take as long as 60 days to get over the stress of transplanting.

Ok will do. So should I just keep doing what I am doing now? As far as watering and shade location goes?

Shade is good when it's recovering from transplanting. As long as the soil drains well, avocados like regular watering. And tim45z10 is right about the ties.

Eventually though it will want sun, at least a half day if not all day, to produce good fruit. If after a few months you put it in the sun, (slowly and over a period of a week or so ) try to keep the pot in the shade. Avocados in pots don't like the pot itself to get too hot.

Your tree is long way to being able to support fruit, like at least 3-4 years. It may make fruit before that, but as it's so small and the branches and trunk thin, it's not good for it's health to try and ripen fruit at this young age. For now take them off if it sets fruit. Better to work on getting it to grow large and healthy in these next few years.

By the way, Avocados are not the easiest plant to grow in containers. Is there any way you can plant it in the ground? It will do much better in the ground, and San Diego weather is perfect for Avocados.

Thanks for the replies! It will eventually be moved and planted into the ground but since I am tentatively moving at the end of summer I wanted to bring this guy with me. I'm in no rush for fruit so I don't mind waiting. I will take your advice and cut-off ties and continue to water regularly. Thanks again!
