I have a couple of tools with the same problem, the release buttons that holds two sections of tubing together has broken off.
My Cub Cadet BC5090 4 cycle String trimmer is a typical example. The tube that is the lower unit is connected to the motor end with a slip joint. The two parts are held together by a little button that prevents the lower unit from rotating when you are using the trimmer. You push in the button to slide the lower unit from the upper unit. This broke off, and there is no way to keep the lower end from rotating while you use the trimmer.
I know this must be a common problems faced by at least one other person on this group. I hope they will share their solution to a broken off release button
