Planting / pruning avocado tree

Many tree was grown from a seed from a friends tree that produces a ton of amazing fruit. His tree is huge. My tree is already about 6' tall and was planted 18 months ago. It is growing too big for any container I can keep it in. I want to plant in my small yard but I really only have a space that is 5' by 6' wide. Is it possible to prune an avocado tree in such a way to train it to stay in that shape vertically or is this a lost cause? My alternatives are to keep in largest pot I can find and stunt growth based on under potting or give to a friend to plant in his yard which would be very disappointing to me. This is my first avocado tree so any help would be appreciated!

That container is not too small for that tree. I have seen bigger in a 24 inch pot.

branching out or straight up is species specific.

i prune all my trees to fit in their space.

Not sure how easy for an avo.

How much bigger do you think it could get before needing to repot?

How big to you want the tree ? It can grow 10-12 feet in that container no problem.

10-12 ft is good by me, but the main goal is to produce a good amount of avocados that taste good so if needs to be larger in order to accomplish that I want to find a way to make that happen. So if it gets to 10-12 ft and has roots wrapping around the container, is it OK to leave it that way or will that cause it to not produce fruit eventually? Another question is whether or not there is a way to speed up the fruiting process? I've been told it can take 5+ years for an avocado tree but this thing has grown so fast that I am optimistic it may come sooner.
