Thanks Cory, have you put your trees outside yet for the spring and summer?

    Evan

Thanks Mike! No, it never does end, constant maintenance, raking, pruning for shape, checking for bugs, spraying, fertilizing, the list goes on and on. It's worth it though, I like seeing my trees grow. Thanks for suggesting the mulch to the trunk, I'll give it a shot.

Hey Evan..It's so true All the work is far worth it...I heard a guy that sprays his trees with three different products to keep his trees clean of pests...They look so big and healthy,...Those bugs can wreak havoc for sure..I just got done mulching my yard up here..It smells so good and I love it..

Do you have a watering system set up to water under the mulch? Or do you use a hose? A hose can be a pain because you have to stand there for quite some time to deeply water, unless you flood that area for a few minutes with the nozzle off the end of a hose.

Can I suggest something else for you too?

Because you live there, I would take a shovel and dig up a circle where the drip line is..Like a donut around the trees..Dig down and then lift up building up soil like a mound on the outskirt of your trees...Then fill the inside with mulch..This way when it rains or when you water, the inside will catch all the rain and really soak your roots during the dry period..

I love landscaping..) I would love to spend time helping you out there. What I could do in your climate.

Mike, that's exactly what I do. I have an irrigation system on a timer with bubblers that sit inside the ring that is dug where the mulch is. I water every other day when it's hot, it's only been in the mid 90's so not too warm yet. We don't get much rain here, maybe a total of 5-10 days per year and it's not much rain even then, mostly drizzles. Here is the seedless kishu before I put the mulch in the irrigation ring.

Thanks Laura. Citrus is fairly easy out here in the desert, just make sure it has plenty of water, gets fed a few times a year and keep an eye out for scale, aphids and ants getting out of control.

Hello Evan, yes my trees are outside now. I was away for a week and left my greenhouse sealed up as it was still cold here when I left and did not expect the hot temperatures we got two of the days I was away. Rain and cooler temperatures was predicted for most of the week. I probably should have put up shade cloth just in case, but I had the flu for several weeks, and being exhausted from that I was lazy and didn't put it up. My trees dropped a lot of leaves but will be fine, but my orchids were cooked. I don't think many will survive, but I will wait a while to see if they send out some new growth. Your trees really are doing so nicely. Are your flowering plants beginning to bloom now too. You have so many nice ones.

Beautiful job Evan. The mulch really adds to the beauty of the trees and yard.

The really smart thing you did over anything I have done is you chose to plant your trees in and area of your yard that is zone 9B. I goofed and planted mine in a zone 6B area of my yard.

    Steve

PS Time to go outside to plant my Meiwa kumquat tree in ground.

Hey mike, you mean the red bird of paradise? All the names I posted are for the photos above them. Sorry guess I should've posted the name above the photo.

Thanks for showing the pictures of your beautiful desert blooms Evan. Such wonderful colors. I flew out to Tuscon last week and was fortunate to see the desert in bloom there while I was there. I always enjoy seeing your trees and plants.

Hey mike, wish I would've known, I just cut off about a dozen seed pods two days ago. When it produces more seed pods I can definitely send you some. Or if you don't want to wait it is called a red Mexican bird of paradise, you might be able to find one online as a live plant. They like LOTS of heat, mine don't start to look like this until it's consistently hitting the upper 80's.

Cory, thanks, April and May are the nicest months for flowers out here in the desert.

    Evan
