Need help with window treatments

I am currently turning my dining room into a conversation area and would like to add color with window treatments. I dont need privacy just something to soften the area. I am thinking of hanging the panels 3-5 inches below the crown moulding.

You could hang simple elegant drapes from medallions shaped like the fluer de lis on the wall. Scroll over pic to enlarge it.

I'd trim them out with more woodwork. They look unfinished as is. Then paint them again in the woodwork color. Your chair rail and the picture molding are distracting. Either remove, if it won't damage the walls, or paint the wall color.

I suggest one mirror, the lower one, and then some black + accent pillows.

    chandy looks great.

Personally, I think long hanging curtains just look dated and too heavy these days. Your windows have a beautiful shape to them. I would show them off! Woodwork trim, even painted white - would be a nice way to accent the windows with a contemporary clean look.

I agree, the windows are beautiful.......I would add more trim, painted white, and forget the drapes which only get dusty and dated....good luck

consider both drapery panels and a roller shade to ad more color depth and layering

You guys have given me some really great ideas. I had not thought about adding more trim, but that is now a definite consideration along with removing the chair railing and picture moudling.

The windows are a focal point, they just need to be made more important. Try the trim first. A really good window treatment will cost you thousands anyway and then you have to vacuum them :

I love your windows too! I like the idea of adding trim, however...

You are a trying to create a conversational area. Light control through the right window treatments can really help. It is hard to have a cozy conversation with harsh light streaming in. I like the idea of bringing some more texture through a woven wood roman shade. You could add a Top-Down Bottom Up lift system for even more privacy and light control.

A really good window treatment does make the room look finished. Not everyone has a gorgeous view out their windows and the right treatment makes that "go away".

I understand the point judyg make's but the fact is rugs have to be vacuumed WAY more than window treatments, but we still use them. They both help make a house feel like a home.

Here is a rendering of one idea.

Don't cover those beautiful windows! They are more elegant than any artwork. Count your blessings that privacy is not an issue and you can enjoy the open feeling those windows allow.

Here's the easy solution - put the rod across just below the palladian window section where the wall goes thru - butt rod into right hand wall. Hang panels on each side of the windows - texture is important here for warmth. I'd choose neutral stone velvet on grommets on a thick Restoration hardware rod.

I guess I'm the odd duck here. I love the idea of drapes to add color instead of more trim. I love the chair rail. Fabric can add such warmth to a room. These windows make this a formal room, the drapery will warm it up. These drapes have an attached valance that ends at the bottom of the arch. It really shows it up instead of hiding the window as well as adding depth of color to the room.

I would trim out the window..it will look finished and also add value. Next hang simple solid color drapery panels as shown by Eagledzines in a color that is just a little darker than your wall color. The chairs are currently arranged like circled wagons. Separate them in to groups of 2 with a table and lamp between each pair. In other words angle them a little less so it doesn't look like a circle. Add a patterned pillow to each chair..they may be different.

A lot of great ideas here...You can leave the arches exposed or accentuate the tall - long windows you have.

I like your original idea the best-long panels, hung high--maybe not as high as you said, but at least 6 inches above the top of the arch. Make sure they are good and FULL.--longer panels need more fullness. I like Barbara's suggestion on the chairs, too.

Gorgeous room! I like the medallion idea. Go very well with the mirrors. I love Love those mirrors. Where did you get these from?

Really love suggestion from PH Interiors LLC w/the tie back panels & fleur de lis hangers. ALSO, adding a wooden bamboo shade would give the room texture & filtered sunlight if closed. You may also want to consider hanging your mirrors vertically on such a tall wall! You've already got a lot of "weighty width" on your window wall.

I love your chairs! I am in agreement with idea of drapery panels. They do not need to be dated if done simply and elegantly. I would hang them high as PH Interiors suggested, however, I do not care for short rods and drapery that does not function. I would use one long rod with drapery that has no adornment. I would also do the additional trim to finish the windows and I would complete the chair rail paneling - it should be all wood and painted the trim color so no sheet rock is visible. All of this will add tons of drama so one mirror is perfect and hang it vertically. I would love to see a little adornment added to your ottoman to pull your eye to the center. Reupholstering it in a solid darker than the chairs and adding contrast welting in a velvet at the top, bottom and on the buttons would be fantastic! Houzz has great pictures of contemporary living rooms with simple modern drapery panels. Good luck.

I so appreciate all of your wonderful ideas. I am leaning toward the panels and finishing the trim work. I have already re-arranged the chairs and I am currently looking for small tables, lamps and fabric samples for pillows and possibly recovering the ottomon. Your suggestions have inspired me to get this project done. HNKS-the mirrors were purchased from Hemispheres about 5 to 6 years ago, but I believe they may still be available.

If you don't need privacy and too much light is not a problem, LEAVE THEM ALONE! Put moldings around them. Perhaps a decorative architectural element where the two round tops come together. The room is monochromatic IT DOESN'T NEED ANY COLOR.

Whatever you do don't destroy the grace of the window by accenting the flat part with a stupid rod and panels. If you can't leave it alone, Your drape should accentuate and be shaped like the round tops.
sorry but i have to say i really do not like your mirrors and think having two of them looks weird. however, it is not about me, it is about whether you like them
    I love everything else though

I think your room is quite lovely. I personally love drapery panels. I think they add another layer to the decor and depth.
Do the trim first. It will be lovely and increase the value of your home. Then you can decide if the drapes are necessary. Don't forget there is UV window film for glare - it isn't your granny's window film anymore. Please post pics here as attachments to a comment when you get done!

Chances are since these windows don't have wood trim, neither do the rest of the windows in the house. It will actually decrease the value of the home to take these windows out of context. If you put wood trim around these windows you will have to put it around the rest of the windows in the house to actually increase the value since they will now look out of place.

The first thought that came to my mind was drapery panels also to add softness, create warmth and reduce the UV rays effect on floors and fabrics. Very long sheer panels with a natural pleat, 2 finger pleat or something a little softer than 3 finger pinch pleats would add to the sweeping grace of the room and the higher ceilings. The arch top will show softly through the sheers for a nice touch.

You definitely have allot of opinions here so I will keep this simple. Draperies are a good idea and great way to soften the space if done correctly. Keep them high above the arch Palladian windows on either posts, a long rod that stretches all the way across, or on two short rods. If you bring the panels below the arched windows your shorten your space and loose the architectural appeal you have going on with the double mirrors.

I think your Area rug should be a little bigger. Love the first idea of the draped curtains and the lower mirror only idea. Two just seem to take away from everything else that is so beautiful!
Yes a bigger carpet and a round glass table (maybe to match the mirror or a gold and glass?) so you can see the carpet. Too much upholstery.
I would paint the wall molding the same color as the wall to soften it, too. And put something really pretty on the GLASS table. ;-)
Another thought: If you love the ottoman, maybe put glass on top, but I really think a glass table showing the rug would be best.
Sheers hung as high as possible in a white or cream to echo your white or cream trim would create an intimate, warm nook revealing the silhouette of the window, a view AND give the space a wonderful light during the day.

The casualness or elegance of the sheer is up to you.
