Oh my goodness! Yes, looking at the second picture, pink is the worst imaginable colour with those floors. I like the dark gray in the kitchen -- to a degree.

The first thing I would do is research a way to paint over the baseboards. Is that the right term? Where I come from terminology is different. I imagine you could get an etching acid that would make them amenable to painting, which I would do, depending on the wall colours in any particular room, in an off-white in a grey or a tan direction.

I'd pick a warm, light colour from the floor (maybe tone it down a tad) for the walls in the living areas, and possibly stick with the grey for the kitchen -- if they are not the same areas.Go for an off-white splashback tile, too, in the kitchen. I happen to think combining kitchen and living areas is not a Good Idea, but so many of us have to live with that. And if you like it, hey, you like it.

To warm and cosy things up, think of great light shaggy rugs for your living areas.

Ummm ......... that bright blue fan? It is bright blue, isn't it? It shouldn't be.

Love those floors! Tons of warm earth tones. All the wood is warm too. But all the current paint is cool. And the kitchen backsplash is cool. You need Crisp Muslin to pull it together. You can customize the the amount of color in the paint. 125% would still look very light but not white.

The kitchen, bathrooms and laundry should be semi-gloss. All the other walls should be whatever is the next higher gloss after flat.

The floors and wood are warm tones. Stick to the warm tones for the walls, so you don't have such a jarring contrast with the floor. Use a very neutral creamy white, in an eggshell finish. And decide on a style before you move on with furniture. Your ceiling fans are ultra modern, your kitchen light is not. Your floors will be a big consideration with everything you do, so keep large furnishings in solid colors - shades of cream and gray.

A warm white. Nice floors but I would have to knock off the tile trim and replace with a wooden baseboard.

There's only one thing that I find to be a total turn-off here, and that's the baseboard. Someone suggested painting them, someone else suggested replacing them with wood. Either way, they are something that I would address immediately. I think that everything else can be addressed rather easily. You're getting good suggestion here. Good luck!

A warm white sounds good. Something like the crisp muslin suggested above.

Navajo White would probably be lovely.

I'm seeing the tile baseboards more and more. Its kind of growing on me. Having scrubbed my share of white baseboards I see the advantage there and it gives it a finished look. If you go with Crisp Muslin they will become a kind of feature. Also, once you put in some furniture, you won't be looking at so many long stretches of it.

Just be careful that you get a paint color that is truly neutral warm. That is why I specifically suggested the Crisp Muslin. Many creamy whites have yellow or pink undertones which you do not want.

Thanks everyone. I think we are going to go with a warm white, but now we have to start picking out furniture... This is our first home and we've never really defined our style before. Any suggestions of where to start with something that would go with these floors and cabinets?

That's the wildest flooring I've ever seen. I can see it maybe in a bathroom, but not in every room. Have you thought of laying laminate over it for now? That black light ceiling fan is hoot too.

Do you like these floors in all of your rooms. If not, now is the time to change them for some lovely hardwood. It would go nice with the tile if you left it in the kitchen. I think the tile is very cold for a bedroom.
Paint will be your last thing to choose after you have chosen your furniture.

Love the kitchen cabinets! Okay, I'm thinking the previous owner got a deal on a bunch of stuff and just added it in. Nothing goes with anything, really. Well, oddly enough the blue ceiling fan and orange fireplace do mesh, but not in a practical way.

For long-term survival and re-sale value, seriously consider replacing the floors. People are either going to love them, or hate them. They are quite active.

Your place would rock with engineered hardwood in a darker colour throughout, but it would have to go with the cabinets.

Failing that for budget considerations, can you bleach flooring like that?? Take it down a few notches?

And the pink, sigh. That must have been purchased as a mis-tint. Same with the grey. It looks like an old battleship grey.

And the mirrored closet doors must go.

Okay second look here...the kitchen light fixture doesn't mesh at all with the others. Oddly enough, I'm also curious to see what the blue fan would look like with a polished nickel look blade instead. At least that would unite it with the other fan a bit more.

You could easily pick a paint colour from the back-splash. Not pure white, but just to cream.

Since you have a black counter-top (which I'd keep), paint the kitchen baseboard the same black as the counter. That floor going up the wall is bizarre. Too weird. Ask a painter, but I think the black in there would work. Everywhere else though should just be the same as the wall colour. Make that floor a bit more subtle.

You could also paint the fireplace black. Actually, that dark grey wall would also look good in black!

See what others say about black. That kitchen wall is screaming for a painting and that's where you could tie your blue fan in there. Get a picture with touches of royal blue and add a cool blue fruit bowl on the counter.

Bright royal blue touches would work well with the cabinets.

As for furniture? Sleek and modern black leather couch with chrome and glass tables.

We actually love the floors, I think at some point we'll switch them out, but probably not until we are looking to resell it. I agree that people either love them or hate them, but that polarizing aspect of the place let us buy our first home in the crazy Vancouver market with more space and better location than we expected, so we love our wild floors.

I get that. I'd think, how many times in your life do you come across floors like this? I love that they got you what you wanted.

Since it is your first home (exciting!) and you have not defined your style yet, give yourself permission to PLAY! Experiment with color. Find what works for you. Get some paint samples and give yourself time to discover what works best for you.

PS Yellow always gets such a bad wrap, but soft buttery tones can make a space feel cheerful and bright. It may work well in one of the bedrooms you want to paint.

Well the "style" of your condo is transitional eclectic. All the hard surface slate is going to be cold and echoey. You need to soften things up a bit. Area rugs are going to really help with that. With so much going on in the flooring, you will need solid color fluffy rugs that match some color in the slate.

If you want to get an idea of what kind of style you like, you could start with browsing houzz photos and saving the ones you like to your ideabooks. If you then look at what you've collected, hopefully you'll see similarities in furniture style or/and colours. Also, go shopping, but don't buy anything yet. If you see a sofa you like, measure it, go home and tape the size out on the floor where you're thinking of putting it. That will give you an idea of how much space it will take up. Furniture looks smaller in the store. Don't buy furniture sets (sofa & loveseat & chair or coffee table and two sidetables for example). Not even if it's a great deal! They are boring and often too large for the space.

I've read that Simply White by Benjamin Moore is pretty versatile. Is that considered having a warm undertone?

Simply White is versatile and neutral. I would say it has a slightly warm undertone. All the whites tend to look very white in daylight but then at night with lights on they show their undertones, which varies with the type of lighting used. Or when the whites are next to something with a different undertone. You really have to paint some on poster board and see how it plays in your house in different locations and at different times of day and at night. I think white is about the trickiest paint color because it can look so different on the wall.

That being said, I would say Simply White will probably look stark and a little sterile with your floors. Looking at your pictures, I would guess Simply White would be very similar to the current ceiling color.

@Jim, awesome! I completely get what you are saying. As soon as you typed Vancouver? Say no more neighbour ;-). Crazy doesn’t even begin to cover it! We currently have the highest gas prices in all of North America and the most expensive real estate I heard now, too!

I think I've changed my mind about painting the baseboard. I tried it on this and it made the room look a bit more ordinary.

That seems to be a good color - I like the grey door and I really like the deep grey walls in the kitchen. Paler greys are too drab in Vancouver winters, but when it's that rich and alive, I don't think it'll get depressing.

I live in a tropical climate and these baseboards would be considered standard. Wood trim by the floor would warp and rot and is not used. I like the Crisp Muslin.

Crazy? I don't think your floor is crazy at all. Granted, I have a similar look in just my kitchen but you get the idea. I used SW Netsuke on my walls. It an read as a very soft yellow or a soft beige with hints of green depending on the light and time of day. Good luck with your selection and enjoy your new home.

@Rina I like that. What color did you use there?

Unfortunately I just made the colour up on my software -- not that it would make a huge amount of difference, as when I pick up actual colours from the websites they don't often come through true to life. I have an idea if you like that -- contact the paint manufacturer of your choice online and send their advisor that picture on an email. Get their suggestions for the closest matches they have. Or put the pic on on a memory stick and take it to your paint dealer, if you have a good one.

@canorton--I used crazy in reference to Vancouver gas and real estate prices. OP called the floors wild.

The colour paint you chose looks nice with the floors. :-) It's similar to our accent walls. I just noticed that.

@Jim Wagner--this is a Cloverdale colour. It's a hi-hyde super eggshell finish. It's on record with them. Weaver Show Home Colour package. Morningstar Builders in Coquitlam also has it.

We have had people traipse through our place looking to see this specific colour. I never would have picked it myself (and still want to switch to blue down the road), but it looks great in Winter, morning, evening, etc.

It looks very close to Rina's colour. Our ceilings are huge, but it looks similar to hers on the walls. If that makes sense? And that's our "wild" painting, lol. (Which will be replaced one day down the road...)

Definitely some good advice here. The floors are a big upgrade and add a lot of pattern so keep the rest of the room simple, solid color, neutral furniture. Keep all wood tones the same color if you add any wood, i.e. tables, etc. or go with black. For wall colors, I think a medium warm gray (a little darker than the current light gray) or a neutral shade of beige (match colors in the floor tile). if you don't want the sharp white ceiling contrast, you can paint the ceilings 1/2 shade of the wall color. I prefer satin wall paint or eggshell finish that does not have a high gloss finish and flat paint for the ceilings. Adding a solid color rug will also tone down the busyness of the floors. Decide on the style of light fixtures you like and keep them in the same color tones, i.e. silver, black, bronze, etc. If you have chrome and silver handles in the kitchen, keep with the silver on other fixtures. If you need a ceiling fan, go with black blades. Congrats on your first home purchase. Enjoy the design and decorating process, and make it yours.
