Chipping for offsets

I have 3 bulbs in particular that I would love to propagate, but they seem to never produce offsets. I've read about chipping but and turned off over the idea of losing the mother bulb. I was thinking that perhaps it's the damage to the basal disc that cause the offsets to form and if that's true what if I just nicked the edge of the basal disc, only going in about a quarter inch from the edge? Would that produce an offset without killing the mother bulb?
