Hello, thanks for making contact. The skylight does open. It is a great way to let a large amount of light into the room. It is a standard Velux window that we painted to match the wooden trim. I guess it is clear because we keep it fairly clean. Sometimes they are in less accessible locations so it's difficult to keep them clean. Hope this helps, Egon
