Lighting help

The side of the room the camera is facing is too dark at night. I'm more concerned about the front half of the room where the FP is.

The only things still in the front part of the room are the sofa and end tables.

There's a can light above the FP which gives off good light for the mantel, but not enough to brighten that part of the room.

I really want a lamp to sit on the rock bench, but I can't visualize how it would look. I thought about putting a floor lamp to the right of the bench, but it would be too close to the table lamp.

Any suggestions? This picture is five years old, so ignore all decor, please. I'm actually laughing at the decor because this was right after the build. :)

Forgot, the wall is NOT pink. lol

You could use an up-light that is not decorative on the bench with a plant covering some of it. It could simply wash the wall with light.

Would an up-light spread out a bit?

Can you post a pic of the fireplace head on? I'd hesitate to put a lamp on the ledge as it might be/look precarious. A table lamp will shine in your eyes when you are not seated and a floor lamp (on the bench) would be too tall and odd looking, I think. Are sconces on the fireplace wall an option? There are some great plug in ones and with cord covers they look quite nice.

I'll take a new picture tomorrow with the shutters closed, maybe it will give you an idea. I'd do it tonight but the grands were here this afternoon and well, you know. :)

I have the same set up at my house, and I have a floor lamp next to the chair and no table lamp. I use the floor lamp for the lighting and the table looks OK without a lamp. That will throw off your pictures on the wall though, so flip the table to that side of the chair and the lamp can go behind or to the right of the chair. (Right side as we look at your photo on the screen. It's to the left if you're sitting in the chair). That's how I have my fireplace lounger set up. Don't have a photo right now to post. You may need to get a smaller table for beside your chair. I rotated quite a few tables through my family room until I found the right one. I didn't want to block the view of the fireplace so I needed a low one.

Here's a picture taken a couple of years ago, not sure if it helps or not, but you can see the old chair is gone. The table isn't really that big, so you think a floor lamp would look okay at the end of the bench? There's a lot of room behind the chair. I'm thinking it would be fine.

I think it would be OK but it would cover up that guy's picture on your wall. Do you use the bench? I think push comes to shove you could put a floor lamp behind the round table if you don't want to move it. Just move the chair over a smidge. I won't have time to post photos of my set up until after Sat. sadly.

The floor lamp would be at the end of the bench or a little further to the right. It's hard to see in this picture but there's quite a bit of floor space between the chair and the wall.

I wish lamps would work on the sofa table, but the light just gets lost in space. :)

Well, I think lamps would work on the sofa table--they'd be great task lighting for anyone sitting on the sofa who wanted to read or knit or whatever. The light they would give would add to the lighting in that area.

It looks as if you need some general lighting in the room--a floor lamp, wherever you put it, would help with that. But you also need to consider task lighting and accent lighting. Put all three together and the room will have more light.

The can light over the fireplace is accent lighting. You could add a picture light to the large portrait to the right of the fireplace. You could add wall sconces on either side of the fireplace.

I guess my main point is that this is a large area. Adding one more lamp will probably not be enough to completely light it at night. I'd look into a variety of ways to add more light to the space--wall sconces, accent lighting for your art, floor lamps, table lamps.

Xarcady, we do have other lighting in the room, but it's the side of the room in the picture that needs more light. There is a table and rocking chair behind the striped chair, and while I could put a lamp on the table, which I've done in the past, it still won't help with lighting the area near the FP.

Lamps on the sofa table are out, I've tried them and since our furniture floats the light dissipates. Table lamps are the best for reading. We don't have problems being able to read. I just want the area in the picture lit up. I love bright light at night in warm weather. When the FP is lit, we turn a lot of the lights off.

I thought about sconces, but if I get some, they'd be for candles for when we lose power.

I like the idea of a lamp on the bench but it needs to be smaller. I'd try eliminating the table lamp entirely, placing a floor lamp snugged between the lounger and the table and then a small accent lamp on the stone bench

Oh, I think I had the wrong perspective - I was thinking the bench was free floating and the wall with pictures was on the other side of a hallway, behind the bench (you know, that there was floor behind the bench). I don't think a lamp on the bench would be as precarious, now that I can see that the wall is above the bench. Why don't you try one of your existing table lamps and see how it looks/works? Do you have a floor lamp you can try temporarily in the spot you're thinking?

Now that I see that wall is right next to the fireplace, I'd still think about electric sconces and put candles on the fireplace during a power outage. I wouldn't want them on a flammable wall.

Well, this might be a bit too groovy for you but there are some very nifty swag lights out there.

Star, I'm thinking an accent lamp may be perfect there.

Gray, you just gave me a great idea about a jar and lights. One would look nice in the back of the room.

Oly, I'll look around for electric sconces.

Terri, those are pretty cool! Thanks!

I too thought hanging lamp. I've had a few in my day, they can be great!

Here's a photo of my similar set up with a small table on the other side of the chair and a floor lamp behind. I have less space on the wall beside the fireplace than you, no bench. Excuse the shirts draped over the mending basket, I edited them out in the second photo. They never seem to get mended. That lamp is a three way one, so I can vary the lighting. Also have pot lights over the fireplace but hardly ever use them.

Pink, I don't know how I missed your picture, I don't think I got an email notification. The light is perfect for your area. I considered doing the same but I don't think one would look good behind a round table.

I finally decided on the type of lamp I want. Here's a link to give you a general idea, but not this lamp. I want the arms to move where I want each light to point.

    Similar to this light

I took two more pictures this morning hoping to give everyone an idea of how much space is between the chair and wall.

Excuse the cheap stain on my sofa legs, all I have to do is touch it and it comes off. My touch-up pen is too light so I need to get another one.

I'll be putting the cord to the lamp under the sofa. Not sure why I didn't do it before today.

The shutters are cracked so there wouldn't be a blinding glare.
