I like the old railing better but neither is my taste. As long as your client is happy, that's all that matters!

I love contemporary, but this is very commercial looking. - museums, hi-tech restaurants, the High Line in New York City. I've seen this look before and now realize my discomfort with it. Wires look like high tension lines. Toddlers might still fall through.

The existing wood balusters are a grotesque misinterpretation of some imagined historic prototype, so getting rid of them is a great start. The proposed new look may be much more in step with the actual age of the building. Good luck with it.

I like the new railing. I like ultra modern style and the incorporation of commercial elements in residential interiors. That said, the surrounding, whatever little we see of it, looks like a suburban cookie cutter home. Unless there are other complimentary elements, I'm afraid the magnificent new banister just stands out in unappealing way. It definitely makes the carpeted stairs look even more hideous than before.

I like the railing, but not in that setting. Think a mix of wood and metal, with a modern shape would have worked better.
