Plank Ceilings

I am considering putting planks over my horrible, horrible popcorn ceiling that is in my L-shaped living/dining room. The kitchen is off the dining room making it one big rectangle on that floor of my house. There is a drywall overhang between the dining room and the kitchen. The kitchen has a normal drywall ceiling. That overhang can go away. It serves no purpose and makes rooms look smaller. My house is tall, skinny, and split level. There is no underground basement. The family room is 5 steps down from dining room with walk out french doors to patio. The family room has a stipple ceiling. Would you put the planks everywhere for consistency? Including hallways with the skylight? My goal is to make house pretty, light/airy, and with illusion of space. I would paint the planks white. Do you think the crown molding needed with planks looks out of place in a split level? I have 8 ft ceilings. The popcorn has been painted so my understanding that it is a real pain in the tuchus to remove plus it has to be tested, etc... Thoughts? Advice? Any ideas are appreciated.
