Questions about iris plants. Digging, ordering, freebies.

There are several old house sites in the country around us, (one on our property) that still have the old iris plants growing up. You've probably noticed the same thing.

A couple years ago, I decided to dig up a few, as well as some Jonquils to replant, mostly as a historical novelty. Now, I've got to like them pretty well. I have an unlimited supply available of purple ones, and a few yellow. Recently, I saw some white ones at a neighbor's but didn't want to ask about dividing/bogarting any of hers. So now I'm looking for white irises.

Found some reasonable bulbs on Ebay; $15 for 15 bulbs and free shipping. I also found an apparent big time outfit called Shreiner's:

So, are those prices quoted ($7.50 - $45.0) for a single bulb do you think? (It might be a good idea to start hoarding these bulbs, might make the prices go up)

I've read that it is best to divide in mid-late summer, but from what I've experienced these things will survive about anything. Also, do all irises bloom at the same time if planted in Oklahoma?

Shoot, I could give you all the white ones you could ever want! They are quite abundant. Are you near OKC?

Most of my iris are passalong plants from friends over the last 35 years so I can't speak to prices. The few I bought I picked up on the clearance rack at Lowe's several years ago. But I can tell you that all irises do not bloom at the same time in Oklahoma. I wish they did. The same is true of the daffodil family. I have over a dozen varieties and they bloom from early February to late April, with some finishing before others start.

I've moved them in the spring, summer, and fall (never, I'll admit, in the dead of winter...) and they do just fine. Maybe they won't bloom quite as well the first year after a strangely-timed move but they don't die or anything! Have no idea about prices. Totally get not wanting to ask your neighbor - I will say that I've never had anyone say "no" when I ask if I can dig some up. Usually offer a trade of some of the colors I have.

Go ahead and ask the lady if you can dig a few plants. Like Kate, I have never been told "no" when I ask. There are to many freebies to go buy them. Good luck

I'm about an hour east of OKC, near Prague, but do pass thru there some. What general area are you in? Have to go to the Del City area next week....

Thanks for the offer, but don't go to the trouble yet. If my travels bring me that way I'll get back with you. I know the Village area well, my brother used to live there.

I've got another opportunity coming round to hit the neighbor up soon.

I just came from a friends house who has many colors of iris in her flower beds and I thought the white ones were the most striking.
