Love the Spruce. Softer than the Cypress. Will look great with red door and black roof and shutters!

I really like them both. One thing to consider is they'll both look lighter on a brighter day. Kind of leaning toward the Spruce, but seeing more of the house would help.

Elyse, it's a lovely house. I think the Spruce would be so nice. One thing to think about...your lower windows are too large for shutters. If actually functional, shutters should be sized so they'd cover the window when closed. If possible, I'd also beef up the posts a bit. Paint all the down spouts the same color as the siding, and white for the one on the post.

I love the cypress, but it looks like I'm the only one ;) I think it would look great with your other choices too.

I'm worried about the Spruce being too dark???

Are you leaving the garage doors white? Will the gutters still be brown with the black roof or are you changing those? Are the shutters going away on the main floor?

Once the color is on your entire house it will appear lighter. The cypress appears too light, less saturated and therefore underwhelming.

I would definitely vote spruce. I think it will look much richer and will be great with the black. And I would not hesitate about the black roof-it's very traditional and you can't mess up like I've seen people do with other colors. Also, there is something very aesthetically pleasing about a roof matching the shutters. I agree with matching gutter colors to the siding and the one post . And later, when you can, beefing up the columns would be an excellent idea. I would add that changing the stark white trim, posts, and garage doors to a creamy color later on might be a good choice. And with the spruce and black, you may also consider a red that leans toward orange. How exciting for you-it will look great!

Ok, the garage doors are being replaced as well, with black hardware. The trim, gutters, and downspouts will all be white as well. Not a good choice? The columns will be replaced with 8 inch square ones. So you're saying no shutters on the bottom floor, but keep the rest? Thanks so much for all of your suggestions!

I think the comment about the shutters on the larger windows is that they should be larger (wider) shutters. A shutter should be sized appropriately to the window. And it's a good idea to be consistent (so if you keep the shutters on the second floor then keep and replace with larger on the first floor).

The gutters can be white to match the white trim. However, the downspouts need to be the same color as the siding.

Regarding the shutters, I would leave them off the lower windows and just have a wide, white trim. Properly sized shutters on those windows would just look odd. I think it's okay to keep them on the upper windows.

The Cypress is a lovely color, but I think the comment about "underwhelming" could be right for the exterior. You might be surprised how much lighter the Spruce will look on most days.

New garage doors with glass panels across the top that mimic your windows would be nice.
