Casement windows are more air tight than slider windows. Which state are you located in ?

We are in Missouri and all windows that will be replaced do face South. I will see if I can attach a photo. Thank you.

5 casements will cost $14,000? That sounds high. What brand window, and what material (wood-clad, vinyl, fiberglass?). Perhaps get another contractor to give you a bid.

There is a reason sliders are about 30% less, and they will not look the same.

In total it would be 11 casement windows-2 per opening, one will have 3.(for description purposes I said 3 upper, 2 lower). They are wood interior/fiber glass exterior.(Beechworth) I've had 3 estimates they are all about the same.

Nice house with stone and stucco and wood trim! My home is brick and stucco and wood trim! If you go with the sliders; they looks a lot better then the crank out casements and the air leakage has improved on the sliders because of the new technology seals in them. I like the idea of sliding to open the window instead of cranking. It is total your call! Many new homes I found out have mixed window types, so you are okay on modern design goes. It all based on your personal style taste! Are you a traditionalist and what to have all the windows have the same type of windows in them or not!

I use casements a lot in our area because the homes are historic, especially in and around dc. Additionally, sliders, particularly larger ones tend to leak more air.

We are actually trying to modernize the home a bit-getting ready to have the exterior painted. Another dilemma! Go dark or light??

Lovely home. Sliders are cheaper for a reason as millworkman mentioned. The casements will be tighter, more secure, more efficient and ultimately, more expensive. The sliders will net you a bit more glass per opening as compared to a twin casement as well.

If you have a Paint or Photoshop software, you can become your own decorator!. Just use this picture and experiment!. Some website may have this type of software to use for free too!

Agreed! I'm going with the casement. I don't like the half screen situation. I like them being inside. Thank you for all of your opinions! Now I may start a new thread on paint choices?!?!

I'm considering replacing our 16 yr old Marvins (they are leaking ..from condensation AND cladding separating)

We have 3 banks of 120" x 70". Divided into 4 equal sections..the 2 ends have the casements.

Plus the casements are going to require refinishing PDQ. It will be my job. I have tried refinishing one and for the life of me I can NOT get the wood smooth(this ain't my first rodeo either) Little fibers stick up no matter what grit ..even going from rough to smooth. SO not happy with that!!

During summer everyday..we open windows and close in the am..plus open and close drapes blinds shades..Boring and I am sick of it. Main reason I am considering sliders. Though if we do go with sliders..will put a "post" in the middle of the run..or maybe I won't use sliders for esthetic reasons...but this refinishing aspect doesn't make me happy!!

I don't really care for the screen inside either..adds to cleaning. But I am an old fart too! :)

Oh and the weatherstripping on 2 has failed and I can't for the life of me get Marvin's attention.(started trying 4-5 years ago.) And I can't seem to just stick it back on..So 2 windows are out of use.

Just like you wouldn’t call Fiat when your 500L has problems , you would not call the window manufacturer ( in most cases), they don’t deal with these type of issues. Your best bet is calling the place from where they were purchased.

Excellent feedback from Todd. Manufacturers --even the household names-- are not set up primarily for direct to homeowner service. Going through your dealer would be more productive.

That said, due to age (you mentioned 18 years in your other post?) you are likely better off simply looking at replacement.
