I have never seen one like this...interesting. Does it burn wood or is it gas? Knowing the mechanics of it will help. My first thought though is to switch out the counter top to a stone surface...the one that is there now does not seem to have a purpose or use. I think a carpenter is going to be your only choice. Unless you want to completely start over. Pics of the whole space would be helpful.

It is a wood burning fireplace. I believe you are right about having a carpenter as the only choice. I have spoken to a few and they are are more than willing to help but they need more direction and I am not sure of what I want. We will most likely go for brown marble that currently exists in the rest of the kitchen. I've attached another picture but it is difficult to get an idea of the entire space. The kitchen has 4 entry points which make counter space crucial (the original point of having this built).

you could have a carpenter cut the width in 1/2 and add drop down panels on the front and sides to pull up as needed, much like a drop leaf table. OR have the carpenter detach the entire front piece and put it on casters so it can be easily wheeled to the side to access the FP doors.

Paint it out the colour of the walls or paint it the same as the other cabinetry in that space. Paint or replace the counter here and in the other area as well; replace it with a solid surface such as granite or marble that can stand up to the heat of the fireplace, then add a complimentary tile to the fireplace surround and backsplash in your kitchen to tie it all together.

Turn it into a pizza oven!

It is a unique and beautiful piece. The thing that jumps out to me is that its style and present color makes it look more like a piece of office furniture instead of part of an inviting kitchen but I agree with mishikins that if you were to paint it that would help tremendously... Gorgeous piece though!
