Are you looking for more cabinet space? Not sure how you will build it up without some major cutting. I like the break above it. I see some red accents in your kitchen, maybe use the top of the current cabinets as a shelf for some accent pieces?

We aren't looking for more space, we just like the look of cabinets to the ceiling. It would basically for look so wouldnt require cutting our existing cabinets. The picture below is the look we are going for.

so basicly you want an enclosed sofit above your cabinets. You could easiy add those and paint them the color of your cabinet--but I agree with an open top and adding accent pieces.

I can't get your new photo to enlarge, but it looks like you could build a wood box above each cabinet and attach it. Then add a second crown to the ceiling. Might look cool to have 2 crowns..

Are u saying your plan is to build extensions on top of your existing cabinets..all the way to the ceiling?

Hi Jayme, Yes, we would like to close that section in and then add heavier molding to the ceiling.

OIC..ok, like add in a soffit-like in the pic? The way it is done in the pic u posted looks good...As for the exising crown...does not look like a lot of space between the existing crown and the ceiling..my concern about adding the same crown against the ceiling after your extension is done...is that it wouldn't look right...too close together with the other crown??? I could be wrong. In any case, u could still put some trim up against ceiling that wasn't as wide/large as the original crown...

i am sorry, if it were my kitchen, id just take all the cabinets off the wall and rattach them as close to the ceiling as possible leaving room for the crown molding u currently have

OR add in some nice textured glass all around the top and put a few lights up there with some cool knick knacks inside the glass so the lights would light up the items within the enclosed glass area? that way u add more lighting and have something cool to look at when the lights come on, or have guests over

I would just stagger some of the cabinets. I don't think any of those pictures look right- they look like after thoughts to me. If your cabinets are stock cabinets and you did not paint them you will never match the finish unless you start over completely. Seems like a lot of work.

You may be able to build a box as tall as your crown molding, then slide the taller box on top, then put your top molding around. Easy if your ceilings a level and true, not so much if they aren't. You will probably need to try a few different top trim profiles to see what looks balanced.

We have 9.5 inches between our cabinet tops and the ceiling.

Adding a blank trim to the cabinet top is doable, though easier with the existing crown removed. It can go back on or be moved up to the ceiling line as you so desire. I recommend a crown at the ceiling to reduce the 9 1/2" "show" of the flat stock trim. Same size as the cabinet crown would work. Paint matching? If these are factory cabinets, matching the paint color and finish will be an effort. A pro painter will be able to match color, sheen and spray the cabinets to match very closely..though if the cabinets have been installed for some time, a perfect match is not always possible.
