I've got a species sericea, and it hasn't suckered in the 5 years we've had it. It does, however, root VERY easily when the branch tips are near the ground, which happens often and quickly, as the longer branches arch over. Obviously, if you keep pruning out the old wood, that won't happen, but we love the flowers as well as the new red growth, so we aren't ruthless about the spring pruning.

'Suckering' may be too strong a word for shrub dogwoods.......that's what comes to mind when I consider sumac :-) But shrub dogwoods are classified as "caning" shrubs, meaning they will produce new stem growth from the root crown. Even Winter Fire :-) Some types will do so more than others but they are quite controllable. A lot of spring and even summer flowering shrubs are caning shrubs - lilacs, deutzia, beauty bush, hydrangeas, spiraea, forsythia.

On 2 acres I can't see the dogwoods being any problem.

I've had one of the new orange Cornus sanguinea cultivars travel like bamboo. C. alba doesn't sucker to form large thickets like C. stolonifera but in the US has bad leaf spot problems outside of the PNW.

I have an Arctic Fire and a Dwarf Blue Arctic willow that are both several years old. Neither has suckered at all.
