When to take them outside?

The predictions for my area from now on are night temps no lower than 43F and days no lower than 58F. My trees are now indoors and getting southern exposure window light.

Are they better off indoors now with temps 65 - 70 F but less light or outdoors with temps 43 - 68 F with sunlight? Or should I wait for warmer temps?

Outdoors, those temps are fine. Mine live outside all year long and we get down into the high 30's every winter. So 43 F is fine. And the light outside, even in part shade is more intense than full sun in front of a window.

But put it into full sun gradually. A couple hours the first few days, gradually upping the hours to full sun over a couple weeks. Keep them in shade outside the rest of the days until fully acclimated to the full sun.

And keep an eye on your watering. The evaporation rate will be higher outside, not only from sunlight and temps but also air currents, especially wind.

Also keep an eye on your night time lows predictions. I have heard you folks can get quick changes in lows during springtime. Mine are used to cooler nights and are hardened off to it, but your's will be not as used to it, so if it's predicted to be lower than 38-40 F, you should probably bring them in on those nights.

As you know, mine have been outdoors for quite a while now. We've had lows like that. I'm sure they'll like the light!

OK, they are going out tomorrow if it doesn't rain too much. By the way, I am expecting an about 3 year old owari satsuma tomorrow. (Spell check insists that "owari" should be "ovary"!)

Lol!! My Oro blanco is coming tomorrow! We can compare notes!

Can't wait to see your new Owari Vlad, and your new Oro Blanco Laura.

Barb, Cory and Laura thank you for you responses. Cory, I grew up in northern NJ near NYC. The rain has been a nuisance but it sure did cause things to green up! I love the spring!!!! Besides putting out my four big citruses, I will also put out my 2 huge figs and a huge (120 lb.) natal plum. Not to mention the currants and vegetables I will be planting. And Cory, you are right, the cloudy weather is perfect for all of that.

Hi Vlad, I'm in northern NJ and my figs have been out for over a month now. I think I covered them once. I have 2 really small ones that I've been bringing in, but the other 7 have stayed out and are pushing a bunch of new leaves and figs.

Sorry Vlad, I thought I was on the fig forum

Hey, nothing wrong with figs!!! I guess I must be at the northernmost range for them because all five of mine are in the ground. The last two winters they died down to the base, but this winter they did just fine and are sprouting like crazy. One actually already has quite a few Figs on it!

I have 2 figs in the ground with a lot of winter protection but still die back to the ground and have yet to produce figs after 3 years. Two figs in pots - get figs every year. Isn't this the fig forum? lol

Mine have been outside full time for the past week or so. I usually leave them out as long as the temps are in the 40s. I know they can handle lower temps but don't want to risk a surprise hard freeze.

Cory, you are too funny!! You and I have the same plants, same set up, same habits and same ideas!! You have been doing exactly what I have been doing and for the same reasons...Hugs to you!

Vladimir, if you are use to actively growing rich green trees, they might change a bit on you until temps consistently stay above the 50's at night. They may yellow, slow down, or even wilt due to cold nights and warmer days, but not to worry..Just keep up your good fertilizer routine, add Osmocote while you can, and continue to use vinegar..Once the heat comes along, they will react quite rapidly and well))
