Loquat pruning

last modified: 10 years ago

Our inherited (from the former owners of the house) loquat tree still has some fruits but there are new leaves coming out over the top. I want to keep the tree at the lower height so that I can reach to harvest the fruits. Is it OK to prune it now? If so, how do I go about pruning it?

This photo was taken about 2 months ago.

This one is yesterday. Sorry it's blurry.

Addendum: https://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/loquat.html says:

"Pruning: Judicious pruning should be done just after harvest, otherwise terminal shoots become too numerous and cause a decline in vigor. The objective of pruning is a low head to facilitate fruit thinning and harvest. Prune also to remove crossing branches and thin dense growth to let light into the center of the tree. Loquats respond well to more severe pruning."

So from this information, I should cut those new terminal shoots? Where should I cut? Those new leaves had grown almost overnight. I didn't notice that they were getting that big.
